Mayor Art Ward said tonight he plans to pull a proposal to hire a private firm to put mechanical boots on the vehicles of those who failed to pay their car and truck taxes.
Ward said a number of people have raised valid questions about the concept that need to be addressed before the city acts.
"I don't want this to seem like a posse," Ward said.
The mayor said officials need to figure out the guidelines for cracking down on scofflaws.
Some also questioned whether the charge for removing the boot --- $175 -- is too high.
Ward said the entire issue needs to be reviewed carefully.
"We need to do due diligence to make sure it's done properly and respectfully," Ward said.

Guess Artie DOES read the blog!
Another decision not made what a surprise.
Finally Art made a good decision. About time. Lets give him props.
So did Ward "pull" it, or is it being "reviewed"? Sounds like he's trying to have it both ways.
"The mayor said officials need to figure out the guidelines for cracking down on scofflaws."
that's an easy one, mr. mayor - have them fined or arrested for BREAKING THE LAW!!!
"Some also questioned whether the charge for removing the boot --- $175 -- is too high."
i say too bad. if you're worried that it's too high, pay your required property tax like you're supposed to, and this will be a non-issue. if you can't afford to pay, then find alternate methods of transportation like carpooling, or mass transit.

shouldn't somebody have done this before the contract was advertised?
this whole thing stinks. this is a great opportunity for the city to collect property tax it is rightfully owed by those who feel they are above the law by registering their vehicles out of state [vermont mostly.]
come on, mr. mayor, get some guts and do something right for a change.

billy from bristol - do us all a favor and literally be "from bristol", a long way from bristol.
What is so difficult, Mr. Mayor, about carrying this out? It's a no brainer! Why should we be respectful to people who are not respectful to the laws of this city? You break the law; you get a ticket; you don't pay the ticket; you get a boot. Real simple. We have way too many lawbreakers in this town. Let's start somewhere.
WHAT A SHAME, ALL THESE LAW BREAKERS GET ANOTHER CHANCE THAT THEY DON'T DESERVE. IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY TAXES ON YOUR VEHICLE, MAYBE THAT'S A CLUE THAT YOU SHOULDN'T OWN A VEHICLE.
I CAN AFFORD MY SHARE OF TAXES BECAUSE I "DON'T BUY" WHAT I CAN'T AFFORD. ONCE AGAIN, WE HARD WORKING RESPONSIBLE PEOPLE HAVE TO CARRY ALL THESE DEADBEATS !!
SHAME ON YOU MAYOR !!
