Nicastro, Betts and Welch gain CBIA's backing
The Connecticut Business and Industry Association endorsed several incumbents seeking state office in Bristol next month.
It backed the reelection of state Sen. Jason Welch, a Bristol Republican along with two state House members from Bristol, Democrat Frank Nicastro and Republican Whit Betts.
It did not endorse anyone in the 77th state House race between state Rep. Chris Wright, a Bristol Democrat, and Republican challenger Jill Fitzgerald.
The CBIA says its endorsement "tells you a candidate demonstrates a commitment to making Connecticut's business climate more competitive and therefore deserves the support of the business community."
It said it looks principally at a contenders support for "business issues," but also considers a candidate’s "overall legislative work, accessibility to constituents, philosophy on how government should operate, and leadership potential."

CBIA endorses Hamzy
Press release from the CBIA:
CBIA ENDORSES WILLIAM HAMZY FOR STATE HOUSE SEAT 78TH DISTRICT – BRISTOL & PLYMOUTH
The Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) today endorsed the re-election of William Hamzy for the state House of Representatives, representing the 78th District.
With the crisis in the financial markets further destabilizing the economy, and the state budget deficit rising, we need legislators now more than ever who will work to strengthen Connecticut’s economy and business climate.
“Bill exemplifies the leadership needed to revitalize our economy and move Connecticut forward,” said John R. Rathgeber, CBIA president and CEO. “He has the vision, experience and commitment needed to make our state a better place for all Connecticut residents."
Legislators elected to the 2009 General Assembly will face many critical issues, including job growth, health care, taxes, transportation, energy and workforce issues — all of which affect the health and vitality of Connecticut's economy and the quality of life for the people of the state.
“We encourage voters in the 78th District to re-elect Bill, who we believe will work to make decisions that will improve our economy and make Connecticut a better place to live and work,” said Rathgeber.
Hamzy, who lives in Terryville, is seeking election in the 78th District, which includes the towns of Bristol and Plymouth.
More about Hamzy can be found at CBIA’s election Web site, CTbizVotes.com. A complete list of CBIA-endorsed candidates and information on key issues in the upcoming elections are also available on the site.
CBIA is the state’s largest business organization, with 10,000 member companies.
