A 16-year-old who tried to swipe a purse left unattended in Mayor Art Ward's outer office at City Hall today found himself pursued by the mayor himself.
Ward apparently chased the youngster out of the building, across North Main Street and into the former mall property across the street, where he pulled up before his legs gave out.
The police caught up with the suspect shortly afterward and took him into custody.
Short lesson: don't mess with the mayor.

Crime is getting really bad in this city if it's happening right inside city hall! I mean in addition to the theft being committed by our city unions.
I think Arty deserves an A.Ward ! Get it? :)
Good for Mayor Ward. It's nice to see someone doing the right thing! If a few more people held the hoodlums accountable then perhaps they wouldn't act without fear and would change their behavior.
If you want to talk about theft talk about your buddies on wall street
The mayor should be careful to not OVER-TAX himself - the taxpayers wouldn't like it.
Rumor has it the theif had grabbed the mayor's purse of Sporty's drink chips.
He must of stolen 8:09's dictionary while he was at it....
The last comment is uncalled for, I may not be a Ward supporter, but he has the courage to chase a theif when many people would turn thier backs on the situation. Nice work, now how about those unions??
Steve: Steve I do not portend to be any moral conscious but the comment 10/7/2008 at 8:09 crosses the line. When you allow comments like that I believe you diminish our culture. I think as these type of comments are allowed people believe it is acceptable behaviour to be uncivilized! I hope one day we can aspire to a more civilized standard.
A lot of people are thinking this, there should at least be a dialogue about it.
I think the drink chips thing is actually kind of funny.
5:04 - If you think that's funny, you're obviously VERY easily amused....
I'd chase anybody who tried to swipe MY Sporty's chips.
Chris Wilson is right. Some of the comments on this blog are akin to grammar school insults.
It gives the casual outside observer a negative impression about the residents of our city.
