Hate speech

I'll spare the names of those who forwarded this thing -- because they are not public officials -- but I think it's worth sharing some of the discussion about an email that circulated the other day to many Bristol people. This is what it said:

WARNING FROM Pakistan
This morning, from a cave somewhere in Pakistan, Taliban Minister of Migration Mohammed Omar, warned the United States that if military actions against Iraq continues, Taliban authorities intend to cut off America 's supply of Convenience Store Managers and possibly Motel 6 Managers. And if this action does not yield sufficient results, Cab Drivers will be next, followed by DELL and AOL Customer Service Reps. Finally, if all else fails, they have threatened to send us no more candidates for President of the United States!

It was sent to many people whom I know, including Mayor Art Ward and two former mayors, as well as other municipal leaders. I got one, too, but only saw it today as I tried to catch up on things.
Only one recipient wrote back to the group who received the original email, to say, amidst some utterly obscene language denouncing it, that the message made him "want to puke."
"And to think - American soldiers are dying so that [f--ing] Assholes can produce this pigshit under the guise of free speech!!"
To which, yet another person on the long list responded, "Yeah, and they are dying so you can talk like that... what a waste!"
"Hate speech is ok in your book??" fired back the first angry recipient, the one who wanted to puke when he read the original message.
Ward then wrote "To sender of this E-mail - I don't appreciate the language and inferences of your E-mails. Whether or not we are in agreement with either all or a partial of these messages is immaterial; it can be done with more civility. If that is not possible then I request that I not be forwarded/sent anymore communications from you."
That caused the initial person who complained to say, "I'm  sorry about the language but I feel that it is a fitting reply to this incessant hatemongering coming from this group ! As long as bigots masquerade as God loving Christians sending out 'Christian Value' crap I will continue to object to their hypocrisy and hate! Why aren't you - a mayor - objecting to this - don't you represent All of the citizens of Bristol? Muslim as well and Christians? Or do you just think their rights are  just a matter of opinion?"
Dodging that issue, Ward wrote back to him again, saying "I am only asking that the discussion be approached and delivered in a civilized manner with respect to those to whom you are sending your message and if you don't feel that you can comply with my request then I respectfully ask that you not include me in your list of E-mail recipients."
I find it curious that only one person among aboput 30 who received the "Message From Pakistan" thought it was worth raising an objection to it.
What's truly obscene is that someone would write, and others apparently endorse, a racist piece of garbage basically accusing one of our two major presidential candidates of being an agent for the Taliban.
People can vote for whomever they like. They can object to candidates' positons and personalities. But when they spew racism and portray a man who may well be our next president as a Taliban plant, they're undermining America and everything our country stands for. No patriot should stand silent in the face of such hateful drivel.

Taliban, no. But see www.obamacrimes.com for a real eye-opener. According to this site, Obama is not eligible to run for President. :)

Whatever you think about Ward's email or the obamacrimes website, Obama is carrying around a lot of baggage. He has made bad choices as far as friends and associates go. And "spreading the wealth" is not American.

McCain/Palin are real Americans, with real American ideals. They will take us into the future "with liberty and justice for all."

"I find it curious that only one person among aboput [sic] 30 who received the 'Message From Pakistan' thought it was worth raising an objection to it."

Steve,

It's quite likely the others who didn't raise objection to it simply deleted it out of disgust, as I would have. I applaud you and the Mayor for reacting as you have. The originator of this email is not of sound mind, and it's truly sad that something so vile, disguised as tongue-in-cheek humor, can invade our psyche against our will, leaving us without any recourse except hitting the delete key.

I guess it's the nature of the Internet and email. However, there are ways of identifying the SOB who originated this crap. Contact your internet service providers and demand they do a trace on the I.P. address of the email source. Unless the original sender was smart enough to falsify his/her identity, which I doubt is the case, the I.P. address can be determined. If Mayor Ward received this email on the city's network, he should direct the Police Department to investigate and report the findings back to you. Once you know who it is, you can expose the SOB on this blog and in the Bristol Press, unless you're going to let this slide.

Even if you do choose to leave it solely as this blog posting without further investigation, I believe in Karma, and whoever conceived and sent this message of hate will pay for it sooner or later.

In the final analysis, this is just one more example of the fallout from a negative republican campaign strategy. It's getting uglier by the hour.

Anyone who says Obama and Biden are not "real Americans" has severe problems.

You'll probably take some flak for what you wrote, Steve, but you're right. And I'm as strong a McCain backer as you'll find anywhere.

Anonymous said...

1) Was Ward responding to the political satire or the first "responder" and his/her profanity?

2) I find it so hypocritical of you Steve to be so outraged over a joke about Barak Hussein Obama when Bush, McCain, Palin, Clarence Thomas, Gary Franks, and countless other Republican have been subjected to and victimized by propaganda coming from the left. Once again it proves how baised you are.

4) I also find it inappropriate that you circulate a story like this. Obviosly the poster was a McCain supporter who is active on the internet. You fail to ID this person which spreads state-wide inuendo and speculation as to who this person is. You Steve obviously hate Republicans and have no resepct for us. And to be honest with you sir at this time the feeling is mutual.

Anonymous said...

Steve: Typical Republican rhetoric and "scare and fear" tactics. It really gets old after awhile, yes?

Steve Collins said...

This stuff circulates all the time in emails. Putting it here is hardly giving it any more publicity or credence than it already has.
Since I don't think McCain has anything at all to do with this, I don't see why anyone would take what I said as a poke against him or the Republicans.
I think John McCain is a great American. I think Barack Obama is one, too.
I loathe the racist crap that is swirling around the internet and I think it's about time that decent people who see it take a stand against it, whoever they support for president and whatever party they normally support.
Oh, and for what it's worth, this blog didn't exist when Clarence Thomas was under fire or when Gary Franks ran for office, so there's not much I could have done.
I don't think unfair attacks on McCain or Palin should occur either, and I know there have been some. But I have yet to see anyone call them terrorists or un-American, which this racist email does. That's over the line for anyone.

Steve Collins said...

I believe Ward was responding to the guy who rejected the Message in obscene terms, not the original message. But sometimes it's hard to tell in emails!

Steve,

What about Joe Biden's comments about not being able to go into a
7-Eleven (in his home state) and not seeing someone of Indian descent?

Yeah I hate recists too.

Steve Collins said...

Joe Biden's comment may have carried a hint of racism, but it was mostly just stereotyping. It's a far cry from painting a presidential candidate as a Taliban plant.
This whole notion that Obama is "un-American" is a sickening slur on our nation. It has to stop.
If we go down the road that some people are taking, it will destroy our democracy, because one basic element is that when one side loses an election, it accepts defeat and begins planning for the next one.
It's hard to accept a loss if you believe the winner is a terrorist or isn't a real American. And that leads places we don't want to go as a country.

I'm with 8:05 Steve. It's really unfortunate but campaigns in general have become nothing more than exercises in "tagging" ones' opponent without getting tagged for it yourself.Stump speeches, soundbites, rhetoric and negative ads seem to be the order of the day.True healthy debate on the issues appears to have gone the way of the Dodo. It's my personal opinion we can thank the success of the kind of "low life" tactics employed by Karl Rove for where we are now.I understand he didn't initiate this sort of practice, but he DID raise it it to a whole new level. In conclusion let me say I concur completely that there is no place for this sort of racism in political campaigns.Professionals should behave you know.....PROFESSIONALLY?

Steve:

You have to read this piece by Dawn Teo. Your journalist friend who was attacked is mentioned in the report. The author brilliantly makes the argument that McCain and Palin are creating the "Lucifer Effect" by labeling Senator Obama "un-American, Muslim, Terrorist, etc." This strategy is proven to be hateful, hurtful and dangerous.

The report is a little lengthy, but well worth the time to read. A very well written, thoughtful, and convincing explanation of what we're witnessing in this 2008 Presidential election process (sadly).

Collins, you are probably one of them too.

Anonymous said...

Aren't there a lot of people who believe that Obama IS a Taliban plant? I don't think that it is racist as much as the result of his actions. His refusal to pledge the flag, his wife's thesis, his minister's sermons, his being friends with a terrorist, his association with the ballot fraud organization...all indicate to people that he is not a patriotic person. Many people don't listen to what he says and only see his actions. I have heard that he was raised as a Muslim, and that probably is part of the perception too.

Anonymous said...

I don't know how anyone who pushes for socialism could be considered American. Literally yes, he's a citizen of America, but his ideals are not representative of this country. The America I know stands for freedom. God save us if that is no longer the case.

Steve Collins said...

I don't know how anyone who appears headed for a big victory on Election Day can be considered un-American when it's clear that about half the country supports him.
To say he's un-American is basically to argue the country is, too.

Anonymous said...

Then maybe we should be heading for a civil war.

Anonymous said...

On the bright side, if McCain wins we won't have to worry about talk of a civil war, voter fraud, Taliban plant suspicion, business closings, and massive unemployment. We will be a stronger nation.

McCain/Palin 2008

Anonymous said...

I can't believe you Collins. Either you're a naive fool or liar.
Sarah Palin has been slandered horribly by the left. Sick pigs on the left have actually made a porno movie with a Palin look-a-like lead. And you're getting all ruffled about a post that obviously was mostly satirical?

Now let's look at the facts. Obama has been given a free ride regarding his background or lack there of by the mainstream media every night for the past year. The fact is that if he were white, that wouldn't be the case. I believe if he was a white guy, Hillary would be the nominee. So his race is hardly a liability, in 2008 it's an asset.

But the worst thing here is your disrespect for us anti-Obama people. I believe the guy is a fraud, a totally inexperienced individual and he is the best gift we can give our enemies abroad. The latter being something that needs to be expressed in a serious tone, not satire.

When I say you show a lack of respect for anti-Obama people I mean this. First of all I don't see this little "controversy" worthy of a "professional" (in your case I use the term very lightly) journalist's public blog. I also find it a smear that you post a story, rumor, inuendo, or what ever you call it about someone whom you choose not to identify. So one can assume this person to be many or one of many. You put duress on anti-Obama people with this action and I think it plain stinks. I see you as a leftist hack.

Steve Collins said...

Though it scarcely needs saying, I am opposed to fake Palin porn films, hanging Palin mannequins from rooftops and any other ridiculous, hateful actions directed at her.
The difference between that stuff and what I posted is that the email was circulating among BRISTOL community and political leaders. As far as I know, nobody in Bristol has made a Palin porn film or hung a mannequin of her from their rooftop.
If I'm wrong, please let me know. I'm always keen on finding a good story.

Apple pie? A man who refuses to respect the American flag? Maybe if there were one or two issues, but there are just far too many major problems with Obama. How can anyone support the man? His ethics are questionable at best. What about his wife? Too many questions.

Odin said...

"geez, what the heck does it take to wake you people up???"

Well, some facts might do it, or a serious debate about the issues...but you can't do that, because the Republicans are incapable of debating the real issues. Case in point: the "Obama disrespects the flag" canard. He won't wear a flag pin because he knows that it trivializes the flag. Any fool can (and does) wear a flag pin. I wore a US military uniform for over twenty years and you know what - there's no flag on it. So find a real issue if you want us to "wake up".

"Well, some facts might do it"

Well then, here are some facts:

~Former CEO of Fannie Mae, Franklin Raines, was Obama's advisor on housing and mortgage policy.

~Real estate broker/developer Rezko (convicted of wire and mail fraud, money laundering and bribery) is Obama's longtime buddy and associate. Obama bought property from him in 2006!

~ His pastor and mentor, Rev Wright who is well-known for his inflammatory, radical sermons (Obama ended his 20 YEAR church membership in May 2008).

~Bill Ayers, former member of the radical Weathermen organization in the 60's and 70's met on several occasions with Obaman, and both were on the board of directors of the Woods Fund of Chicago.

~George Hussein Obama, Barak's brother who lives in Kenya in abject poverty.

~Obama's wife's blatantly racist college thesis.

and there's so much more being squelched by the Obamaians and the media.

This should be your wake-up call.

I see disaster in the future of america if by some miracle the mccain, palin tckets wins the white house. He may have been a decent leader in his younger political life, but his age and ableness to carry the usa to better things are questionable. He tries to portray concerns for the middle class and when he has no idea what it's like to be middle class after all he is big bucks after all he is married to the anhieser bush family, not even knowing what he owns or how much he owns, so you cant tell me he can relate to the rest of the people.

Anonymous said...

4:02 What would that disaster be? Lower oil prices? Keeping your job? Having a strong militia? Reducing the national debt? Lowering taxes?

If that's a disaster, what do you call it if Obama "I Don't Salute the Flag" gets in? Do you have a word for no Constitution, terrorist attacks, business closings, unemployment and higher taxes?

Anonymous said...

"He tries to portray concerns for the middle class and when he has no idea what it's like to be middle class"

Hmmmm...lets see...Obama reported accounts with Morgan Chase Private Client Asset Management, an elite firm that deals only with the rich, as well as a host of retirement accounts, some in the name of his wife, Michelle.

Because the required disclosure forms allow candidates to report their assets in ranges, such as $250,001 to $500,000, Obama's net worth at the end of 2007 -- not including his home and other nonfinancial assets -- was pegged between $2,022,016 and $7,356,000.

"You can't tell me he can relate to the rest of the people."

Uh gee...truth be told (and it rarely is by the Obama crew) it looks like Obama would have the exact same problem, huh?

He's blowing sunshine up your butts and you're fallng for it hook, line and sinker.

Your wrong, Obama can relate to the middle class, being that he was one growing up, sure he may have money now isn't that part of the american dream? Plus he earned it, he didn't marry it, what assets he has isn't even close to what mccain has. And as far as not wearing the flag pin, so what! That has no bearing on his beliefs, it's just a novelty item to show off. The other issues taxes, fuel prices ect. you really think mccain cares if the prices go down? He will tell you anything to get the white house,he can afford anything he wants.

Anonymous said...

Today on my way to lunch I passed a homeless guy with a sign that read "Vote Obama, I need the money." I laughed.
Once in the restaurant my server had on a "Obama 08" tie, again I laughed as he had given away his political preference -- just imagine the coincidence.
When the bill came I decided not to tip the server and explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redistribution of wealth concept. He stood there in disbelief while I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed more in need--the homeless guy outside. The server angrily stormed from my sight.
I went outside, gave the homeless guy $10 and told him to thank the server inside as I've decided he could use the money more. The homeless guy was grateful.
At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment I realized the homeless guy was grateful for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual recipient deserved money more.
I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application.
Also, employers could announce the consideration of employee raises, then withhold those raises and give the proceeds to a worthy cause, preferably one involving non-workers ... PRICELESS!

Neither one of the presidential candidates is hurting in the money department, so don't think that one "feels your pain" more than the other. But if we're talking about relating to the common person, how many of us have friends who are anti-white, anti-America, pro-voter fraud, and pro-terrorism? Obama is certainly not "one of us."

The fact that he would be prohibited from a job with the FBI should tell you that he is not qualified to be President and Commander in Chief of our armed forces.

Due to the premeditated removal of the security programs ( designed to PROTECT us from illegal contributions to political campaigns ) instituted by mr. obama , it is probable that many illegal contributions have come from overseas .
