Next up is whether to complete the deal with ESPN to discontinue Birch Street from town line to Ronzo Road. The sports giant would take over the road and it would be closed to the public.
Art Ward said that in 2005 there was concern about federal money that would have to be repaid. Asked if amount of federal cash has to be repaid. And he wants to know the amount and who pays it.
Mayor William Stortz said the amount was about $240,000. No determination about whether it has to be repaid, the mayor said, adding that it is likely "a much lower amount" if any will need to be repaid.
Stortz said that city and ESPN would both pay.
Craig Minor said that city already waived reimbursement of the money in an earlier motion. "It's a done deal. We already voted to waive it," Minor said.
Richard Lacey, assistant city attorney, said city voted to waive reimbursement of city money. But the agreement with ESPN is that no more than half the federal money would be paid by the city. Unanimously approved.
"This is great," said Jackie Bracco of ESPN.
