During the public participation session of the meeting, after the parade of familiar figures, Republican mayoral hopeful Ken Johnson took the floor.
Johnson congratulated Art Ward on his primary win. He told Ellen Zoppo, "I personally appreciate your service to this city and this community for the last six years."
Johnson then said he greatly appreciate Mayor William Stortz's three decades of service. "All of us owe you a debt of gratitude," Johnson told the mayor.
He followed that up by thanking the entire council for its service.
Johnson then said he anticipates "a positive and lively discussion of the issues" in the weeks ahead.
"Ken, thank you for the kind words," Storz answered. Then he suggested adjourning on that note.

What was the purpose of Ken Johnson addressing the City Council if that's all he had to say? That should have been done in private.
Face time. Were the cameras rolling, Steve?
My point exactly, that was totally inappropriate of Ken.
Council meetings would be a half-hour long if it weren't for all the grandstanding for the cameras. Get rid of them.
If Ellen hadn't lost every district, including her own, I would be apt to beleive that rumor. But because she couldn't get her own party members in this town to support her, there is no reason she would put herself through another election with such a high probability of losing. Losing 2 election within months of each other would be a worse fate than death to politicians.
It was wrong for Ken to make statements of campaigning nature during the public participation of a council meeting. Council Meetings are for bi-partisan community issues, not making statements specific to the election.
Did he say anything about the CL&P refund or has that taken a back seat to his campaign?
Ken Grandstanding Johnson you mite think that you are polished, but behind this mask is a man that is desperate.Ken you were successful in retiring Bill Stortz you will be following his foot steps come Nov.Come to terms with it Ken, if my memory serves me correct Tom Lavigne had no problem defeating you as a council canidate.
So much for keeping things positive and just discussing issues....
"Council Meetings are for bi-partisan community issues, not making statements specific to the election."
That's funny! Did anyone tell the Council members that? Have you ever been to a meeting? Politically-motivated statements and zingers fly left and right. The campaign started at the January meeting and has been going on ever since!
I agree that comments should be restricted to issues people have with regard to the city ... not political statements or personal attacks. If you have a problem with a councilperson, approach them personally and not make it an issue in front of the t.v. to get your face in there in an attempt to embarrass and harass the councilpersons. Chinchetti is an abuser in a huge way and should be escorted out whenever he steps out of line, which is the minute he opens his mouth.
I see the Democratic bloggers for Ward are alive and well. The party hangover from Tuesday night must be over
