Mandates cost city schools more than $14 million annually

Superintendent Philip Streifer outlined all of the partially funded and entirely unfunded mandates that weigh down the city’s $100 million education budget.
In testimony he offered to the legislature, Streifer said the tally for educational mandates alone come to more than $14.7 million annually.
That includes nearly $1million yearly to pay for transportation for students who don’t attend public schools.
Among the many other mandates are $130,000 in drug education required for health staffers, $500,000 annually for evaluations of teachers and administrators and $700,000 for special education.

Dr. Phil,

How much does the state provide for the city education system each year.
How much does the state contribute to new buildings and additions?

There is a price to be paid for being owned.

And they want MORE regionalization???

Steve this is unrelated to this story...I noticed yesterday that the Bristol police installed cameras at the intsection of Stafford and Matby right next to the plaza. I never heard of this being in the works. Once I say them I got very upset. Why are those cameras in THAT intersection ?????

Hey Dr.Phil

How about taking a cut in pay.Seems the city of New Britian, Merdien and Waterbury can pay there Super 150,00 a year for the school year 2009-2010 and yet you are getting between roughly 190 -210,000 a year and those towns are bigger and thier medien income is more than Bristols, also it amazes me we have the second highest school lunch prices behind Greenwich. Forgive me but the last time I looked know one I know in Bristol makes as much as some one in Greenwich.

This current education situation is not going end pretty for our students. Very frustrating to know that no one that can change our situation refuse to notice that things are very wrong. Our kids are losing out day in and day out.

Mr Mayor, are all the mandates Education related, or might some of them relate to city government?
