City fuel usage shrinks

The city used 36,206 gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel in December 2008, according to Mayor Art Ward.
He said the city used just 19,711 last month, a rather stunning drop.
The mayor credited more conservation among departments and employees. But, wow, that's quite a change.
I'll see if I can get more complete data for the year soon.

It would be nice to get the November and then the January number to get a more accurate picture.

November numbers should also be available.

Hope it is true.

as much as i love to jam the bloated and inefficient dpw, parks department, etc., i must say i am impressed with this drop in fuel usage. now lets see if this can become a permanent thing, rather than just a knee-jerk reaction to the bad economy.

Maybe it was inflated in 2008?

It's nice that the fuel numbers are down and as a tax payer I love seeing that but at what expense is it costing us? I called the police department and found out that with all the new officers we are hiring less officers are on the road because in order to keep the gas costs down they are putting two officers in some police vehicles.
This means that less areas are covered.

I called surrounding police departments and found that the practice of putting two officers in one car went out in the 70's because it was not cost effective. Leave it to Bristol to take up a practice that is out dated.

I want to see gas savings but I don't want it at the cost of public safety.

10:46 - inflated like your ego is?

Something is not right for the cost to be almost in half.Something stinks besides the scotch on the Mayors breath.

Will we get on going reports to compare, or is this another one time media splash like the use of GPS to monitor vehicles?

What ever happened with that Mr. Mayor?

Sounds like people were stealing has in 2008.

police chief drives the city car all over using taxpayer gas - even on his dates! What is up with that Mr. Mayor? Guess its okay as long as the Police Chief doesn't say anything. Have him use his own car on his dates, not taxpayer money!!!!!

Sounds like the police chief has a stalker.
