Scarola vows to fight for taxpayers

Press release just in from Republican City Council hopeful Richard Scarola, who's running in the 2nd District:

An open letter to the voters of Bristol:

Before I begin going door to door, I wanted to write a brief introduction letter to the residents of Bristol mainly the voters in district two.

My name is Richard P. Scarola and I am running for City Council in district two. I have lived in Bristol for 33 years and I have owned a house for 16. I have a unique blend of both private and public sector experience that I will draw upon to help navigate this town through the choppy water that is the present economy. My experience is as follows:

3 years self employed Home Improvement contractor
7 years Federal Corrections Officer/US. Dept. of Justice
5 years General Manager. Restaurant
3 years Army National Guard
8 years U.S. Marine Corps
Community:
6 Years Certified Level 2 USA Hockey Coach, West Hartford Youth Hockey
4 years Baseball Coach, McCabe Waters Little League
2 years Baseball Coach, St. Anthony’s School
Past/present member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veteran’s. Veterans of Foreign wars and the Exchange Club

It is from this experience that I chose “Fighting for the Taxpayer” as my campaign slogan. From a taxpayer standpoint, I have seen my property taxes climb while city services have dwindled. I have watched as families’ struggle from paycheck to paycheck wondering why they have lost their say in government. I have seen a government that has grown into an “entitlement entity” that believes they have every right to your hard earned money. I have watched the center mall site reduced to rubble while the towns around us (Plainville and Southington) have managed to attract business and rebuild their towns. I have watched certain sections of our community basically just left to corrode, wither and die. I believe when elected, I will be an effective voice and resource to the residents of this town. You will always have a say. I have no obligations to local or city government. My obligation is to the constituents of my district and I will act as such. I am proud to be from Bristol and to call Bristol my home and I would like to bring Bristol into the 21st century so that we can compete with surrounding towns.
My basic platform is this:
Leaner, more effective city government
Working to ensure that every dime of taxpayer money is spent as efficiently as possible
Aggressively marketing Bristol as business and family friendly
Effectively reducing blight in the West End.

As I begin my “door to door” journey, I look forward to meeting everyone in my district regardless of party affiliation. I look forward to hearing your concerns and your frustrations. Most of all, I look forward to being your next City Council representative from District #2.

Respectfully submitted,

Richard P. Scarola

so far, he hasn't said anything that any other candidate hasn't already said - this really sounds like a republican platform kind of thing, they all sound alike.

he sounds pretty good to me!

Sound better then the current council members. He can fight with Ward too & win - 8 years in the Marine Corps.

A war veteran too. He has my vote.

When was the last time we had a candidate that didn't vow to "fight for the taxpayers"?

All candidates should fight for tax payers. Unfortunately in Connecticut we have a Democrat majority who fights first for special interest groups.

Be assured McCauley and Marco will fight for the public unions.

I don't mean to embarrass you, Rich, but the Board of Finance sets the level of spending and taxes, not the City Council. You really ought to read the job description before heading into your interview.

We're not off to a good start, are we?

I am confused, so you are saying the City Council has no say in the levels of spending and taxes? Really?

O-Dumb never heard of the Joint Board apparently.

But his patern of ignorance is so long, it's no suprise he got this wrong too.

I will vote for you mainly because I can't stand McCauley who sits there and does nothing. If I get one more letter from his dogs I am going to puck.

Because Union members don't pay taxes right?

I guess you should be the one to explain to the teacher unions that in this bad economy when millions in the private sector are losing their jobs, companies are going bankrupt and state, municipal and the federal government in billions and trillions of dollars in debt, it might be nice to make a concession, take a pay freeze or at least contribute more to their gold-plated health insurance and pensions.

So how about it?

Your argument is flawed. Do the math.

The Joint Board is a myth. Board of Finance = 8 members, City Council = 7 members. Do the math.

Mayor appoints weenies to the BOF, council approves. Use your head and find your own cliche' please.

Concerned Constructive Conservative said...

I'll admit you're actually right Odin. The BOF in Bristol is relatively powerful, espcially when they have a strong chairman.

Thank you to the wise men who wrote the Bristol Charter and thank you BOF...otherwise we'd be up to our ears in red ink (like the State of Connecticut).

Thank you to all the fiscal conservatives who are serving and have served on the Bristol Board of Finance. The taxpayers (especially ones who don't drink heavily from the public trough) are indebited to you.

CC,

The teachers did make concessions agreeing to a 1 1/2 year freeze at salary step and have been steadily increasing their contributions to healthcare for the past several years with increases in deductibles and prescription drug co-pays from 5/10/20 to 10/20/30.

Assuming your information is correct, I say that's good.

I also assume you're referring to Bristol. It'd be nice if other towns and municipalities followed suit.

Concerned conservative - the mayor picks who he wants for just about anything in this city, including jobs. I think by allwoing this much power it can cause corruption & favortism.

This guy has my vote! Kevin (mccauley) does nothing - except try to act like he knows what he's doing.

It already has caused much favoritism, way too much!!!!

Of course with the winners (and in Democrat dominated Bristol, it's usually the Democrats) come the spoils. And the connections to gov't jobs are some if not all of the spoils.

As far as the Finance Board goes, that's another story. While short-sighted Democrat mayors may someday try and stack the BOF with tax and spend liberals, it would not be a wise decision. The BOF members (especially the chairman) takes the heat for making tough fiscal decisions that, most of the time, the politically conscious (and oft-times irresponsible) mayors are afraid to do.

Again thank you to the fiscally conservative Board of Finance members past and present.

1:26 - does it really feel that good to be able to publicly demonstrate stupidity?
If it does, you must be the most STUPIDLY ELATED person on this blog.

How Rich, how???

Please give us a concrete example of how you intend to do any of the things you mention!

Scarola has my vote, I just wish he was running for Mayor.

Maybe he can replace Gill on the ballot!

1:30

Maybe you can convince Barns to change the ballot: Scarola for mayor, johnson for council.

Rich, will you continue to fight, after the election, from the outside?
