Gary Lawton, who aims to run for mayor as an independent, said this afternoon he only has about 27 more signatures to go before hitting the required total. He plans, of course, to round up extras as well in case some get thrown out.
His petitions are due by 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Chaulk up another miserable failure of the Bristol Republican Town Committee leadership in not controlling this damaging situation.
The clueless Bristol 3rd District chairman and his cohorts deserve equal if not more blame in this. They could not find it within themselves to harness the energy and passion of a fellow Republican who one would think shared the same basic principles of lower taxes and less government spending (fiscal conservatism) that they do. Of course shared fiscal conservatism may not be the case in dealing with RINOs, which some Bristol Republicans evidently are.
The biggest problem is the pattern of behavior of the people who seem to be running the show of the Bristol Republicans today. They get almost as many to turn on them as they do to support them. Yet they barely ever take a stand on anything. Why?
The Chairman of the 3rd District is a gentleman and serves his party with dignity, respect and honor.
Mr. Lawton should have either accepted the results of the caucus or should have gone the route of a primary.
WHO ?
"honor, respect", for whom? Those he feels worthy?
And guess what? Lawton is doing exactly that, PRIMARY-ING.
LMAO!
Lawton is not "PRIMARY-ING," he's seeking signatures to run as an Independent Candidate for Mayor.
It's obvious that he is the one who cannot share the sandbox with other folks, as he is now on his third political affiliation in a year while he gropes in the dark for some group to embrace him.
His behavior on the night of the GOP caucus was akin to Ken Johnson's storming out of council chambers just a few years ago.
once agian 1:58 and 9:24 not getting it the team chose it line up to primary would cause possible conflicts in the party itself so i chose not to force a primary and let the current line up stand , do i agree with it in some respects no but the chose who they chose sothats all there is on that.
as far as me running as an independent i have not switched parties i still believe less tax less spending keeping govt. out as much as possible but i am doing in my way and thats the beauty of this country you can follow your own ideas and fight for what you believe in so i am doing just that once agian you dont have to like it but you cant stop me all you can do is mope and gripe about it. so sad
Ward did the same thing when the DTC chose Zoppo over him.
holy crap. gary lawton - do yourself a favor and don't add to the blog. your posting at 9:57 a.m. certainly does not help your campaign. when you want to put information out there under your true name (not as anonymous) it needs to be proof-read (and coherent). otherwise, you will needlessly make yourself the subject of a lot of negative talk.
look, i'm not voting for you anyway, but i don't want to see your image slaughtered by the jackals who post on this site. it gets really ugly and it doesn't feel very good.
your posting does not put you in a flattering light. better to be silent on these pages and put out press releases or talk live after you've thought things out well and know what you're saying.
ugh. try and act mayoral, please, or you'll kill your chances of success before you even start.
take a lesson from richard scarola's experience - search the blog and you'll see some of the nasty comments he garnered, which just go to show that he made things much worse with his blog responses.
Yaaaa!! GO LAWTON!
At least Mr. Lawton is talking (or writing anyway) on a regular basis. He doesn't just pop in every other week or so like Mr. Gill (who is obviously too busy "lawyering" to bother)...Maybe the R's should reconsider?
As a follow up to my comment at 11:10 a.m., this is the previous post I referenced:

How is this a failure? The 3rd district had more republican candadates so it came down to selecting 2 out of the 3. Didn't the dems have a similar situation in McCauley's district?
Where is Ken Johnson?
