Reporter Jackie Majerus' story about the downtown grocery store in today's paper is clearly an important one as the community talks about how best to redevelop the mall. Here's the story:
BRISTOL – A petition drive is just the first step of what the manager of Bristol Discount Food Outlet hopes will be a citizen effort to save the small food store on the downtown mall property.
Bob Veilleux, manager of DFO, said the grocery store has a month-to-month lease with the city and an uncertain future.
"It's really up to the customers, the community, whether they want this store or not," said Veilleux. "The only way that this store will be standing a year from today is if the community gets involved."

Arty is in charge now ..... Just kiss your bottom bye bye .... He got rid of Ocean State Job Lot and Discount Food Outlet in high on his list to go .
You need to understand the thought process involved ... If you remove the safe havens of the poor , you will force them to move elsewhere leaving Bristol with the upperclass elite being able to enjoy a leisurely stroll thru a serene Downtown .

Yea, this city's been trying that for years. How's it working so far?
That's right, let's throw a scare into all those who WALK to patronize this store.I have no doubt the Mayor is fully aware just how imortant this store is to those individuals and as such is giving this issue his full attention. To imply he doesn't care about these shoppers is simply irresponsible and false.
I am not sure how to take your comment 1035 . Art has no real say in the matter. But i would prefer to see it tore down and reposition on the parcel maybe smaller and up closer to the road front. There is a need for a store in the downtown area.
.....10:35 is the type of negative blogger most representative of the posters on this site - mean, vindictive, uninformed, ill-intentioned and mindless - how about coming up with positive suggestions to address the concern rather than stirring up chaos with your flimsy, transparent political agenda- so much for your lack of genuine feelings of compassion, you moron.
...1:47 is right on the money. The 10:35 poster isn't really interested in the subject at hand or motivated by any concern for the City or its citizens. I do "understand the thought process involved"...10:35 obviously is an angry, vindictive little person with an ax to grind who should share his/her frustration with a licensed therapist instead venting on the blog.
I'm sure that the 10:35 AM poster has excellent health insurance from the City of Bristol, so a licensed psychotherapist should be covered, at taxpayer expense unfortunately.
DFO is a great store. I certainly hope it can stay.
Hey 1035 are you going to explain your comment or you just like to drop bombs
It appears that several posters have chosen to handle ' truth hurts ' by simply refusing to accept the fact ( DFO is soon to be a memory ) and attack the messenger .
Just so you know .... your assaults will not change the facts .
Hey 1035 are you going to explain your comment

The previous administration had negotiated a plan w/ O.S.J.L. that would have quaranteed a vacant mall LAST spring AND assured O.S.J.L. would continue to have a presence in Bristol . Councilor ward was a member of the group to prevent that from happening . Now that mr ward is mayor I find it reasonable to believe that his stripes have NOT changed .
I hope this has helped "January 23, 2008 4:30 PM"
Thank you for the explanation .Art wears a new hat these days .Please consider that BILLS proposal would have cost the city money for something they had already won . It would not have changed DFO status
Councilor ward was a member of the group to prevent that from happening .
This was during the Stortz Administration and as a result Artie wasn't part of anything.

(A) Firstly .... There is no tax revenue being derived from the ward decision and the mall fiasco would be a year closer to completion had the plan not been blocked by ward and his associates . Tax revenue is important to some in Bristol and if the stortz /OSJL agreement had been followed Bristol would be much further along in the process of developing the Mall site AND still have tax revenue coming in from a thriving business .
(B) Doing everything in your power to prevent progress from being achieved to resolve issues created when he was 'deputy' mayor indeed does make Arty an integral part of the issue .
Please shut up, Bill.

Not a bad idea. Can we also get rid of all the "slum lord" properties, blighted buildings, shopping carts, etc.
I love DFO!!!
