The Central Connecticut Chambers of Commerce is sponsoring two nights of debates this month in Bristol.
On Thursday, Oct. 21, in state House debates that will be held at City Hall, the candidates from the 77th and 79th district will grab the spotlight.
In the 77th, Democratic incumbent Chris Wright face Republican challenger Jill Fitzgerald.
In the 79th, GOP challenger Peter Del Mastro is taking aim at Democratic incumbent Frank Nicastro.
On Tuesday, Oct. 26, at Chippens Hill Middle School, the contenders for the 31st state Senate district and the 78th House district get their turn.
In the 78th, two newcomers are squaring off: Democrat Rich Covello and Republican Whit Betts. The seat is open for the first time since 1994 because state Rep. Bill Hamzy is stepping down.
In the 31st District, as readers of this blog are painfully aware, state Sen. Tom Colapietro, a Democrat, is facing a tough battle from Republican Jason Welch.
The debates each night are slated to last from 7 to 9 p.m. so I assume each district's will last about an hour.

Go, Whit and Jason! I can hardly wait!
Interesting that the Chamber paired the 31st and the 78th.
Certainly will maximize support for Welch and Wit
"Sen. Tom Colapietro, a Democrat, is facing a tough battle from Republican Jason Welch."
You betcha. Can't wait!
I can't imagine that Covello is going to creep out of his hole and reveal himself at this debate. It'll never happen. There will be some kind of excuse.
What is the format for these debates? Will questions be taken from the audience? I have some questions for Colapietro, he has some explaining to do.
If you jokers are wanting to get serious for once ask Welch what those exceptions are for the death penalty since he is now a great death penalty advocate. Who should be exempt? Are you forgetting the crime? Or should you exempt a friend?
Sounds like barn-buners to me!
(not)
8:55 AM Great attitude.First,I wonder if you'll even take the time to vote.Second,I'm CERTAIIN you will scream the loudest if the victorious candidates fail to meet your approval. Finally, these debates are an attempt by the Chamber to give "voters" an oppurtunity to make an educated, informed decision on election day.Why wouldn't you want to avail yourself of that oppurtunity?
Time for a CHANGE
The union controlled dems . have done enough damage here AND in Washington .
buh-bye Tommie!
last i checked, covello wasn't hiding in any hole from which to creep out of. he has been active in town for close to 40 years. don't like him? get out and vote. got better ideas? show up at a town meeting. want to be informed? head to the debate. want a guy who will stand by his principles and work for the people? vote rich covello in the 78th. you want plymouth & terryville to have a voice? be part of the solution.
Covello is not active. He moves around a little when he wants to be elected, but that's it. If you've been to the meetings, the fundraisers, the concerts, you haven't seen him. I'm not complaining; we're all better off for it. He caused enough heartbreak in this town.
Whit Betts is the person we need to represent us in Hartford. He listens and he gets things done. We sure don't need Richard Covello and his micro-managing arrogance. We need BETTER representation, not a total lack of representation.
Vote for Whit!
12:24 Now that you're back to the old fallback for you(namecalling) You really should say the insurance bums like you and Welch. Do you want to control the world?
Blah, Blah, Blah lets call some names . That's all you seem to know . Answer the same question "Whats Welch done at all? Whats his record? ETC.What has he ever done for Bristol or any of the 31st district ?
2:12 You mean Betts don't you ?
JUST A HEAD'S UP...Ellen Zoppo Is "Behind The Scenes" "BIG TIME" For Colapietro and Covello...Pulling Those Strings To Get These Losers In...
Sounds Like Nothing But "BIG TROUBLE" To Me!!!
interesting points. i'd be curious to hear what "heartbreak" you are referring to. and incidently, i need to respectfully disagree with you. covello IS active and has been active. if you haven't seen him at "meetings, fundraisers, and concerts" you haven't been looking.
as for "micro-managing", the only way this town (and most towns) get anything done is via committee and consensus. that he is detail oriented and results driven does not automatically equal "micro-managing". and as for "arrogant", i see him as being an intelligent, well-informed, and proud man. some may call it arrogance but i think you may just find him intimidating and easy to throw stones at. personally, i want someone who is NOT afraid of the system and DOESN'T play nice just to placate name-calling political bullies. i want the person with the voice, the person with the smarts, and the person who has taken my hometown interests to heart. sorry, naysayers, but he's got my vote.
Vote Belch and Wetts
