Formerly a mfg city dominated by unions but moving in the other direction. Education OK, but again dominated by the union vs. teaching....
Value of housing is pretty good. Worry about taxes and the cost of government
Well 1:49, 85% of the neighborhoods are safe to walk in (and the kids can play in the front yard), the educational system in Bristol is as good as it gets anywhere in CT (my children got accepted to the colleges of their choice - no remedial classes and graduated on time). The park system has a lot to offer and taxes are no worse than anywhere else in the State. Property values have held their own for the times we are in.
I'd tell them that it's a friendly town and a fine place to raise a family, but still very blue collar. The college-educated sons and daughters of former factory workers come back to Bristol and settle down here, which is great, but they don't demand the amenities you would expect from someone after they've seen Paree. They're content to drive to Hartford/Torrington/Waterbury for their performing arts fix, and to Plainville or Southington for fine dining.
Bristol is a city in Serious Decay Southington and Plainville have much more to offer and are more convenient. Rents are about the same everywhere. Good luck with your new job.
Bristol is a middle class community with a wealth of talent and giving people. The down side is the small faction of those who are always looking for something for nothing, to fix the blame for societal problems on everyone else and contribute nothing to make Bristol an even greater city.
Republican Hacks are still at it. Blah, Blah , Blah same ol crap !This is what I'm talking about with the dingbats on here. If the unions were as bad as these jerks say they wouldn't have screwed so many of them out of their money and they would be on the unemployment line. I wish that happened to these insurance creeps!
Compare the mill rate and services in Bristol against neighboring towns rather than shooting your ignorant mouths off - mill rate is lower than most and services are overwhelming greater - can't have it all, we all need to exist.
Don't do it.. Every road from Bristol to the highway is destroyed..even the 2ndary streets, it takes double the time to get anywhere, especially work.. no nightlife, no decent places to eat, mall site looks like a bomb hit it.. and the polticians think it is still a small town, when it is clearly a city.. RUN don't walk RUN!!!! Don't waste your time or $$$..
I agree with Realist. Our property taxes are certainly in line with, or lower, than most area towns. And contrary to popular opinion on this blog, our city services are quite good. I bought a home in Bristol 12 years ago, (moved here from another state) and have no regrets. Good luck to the potential new resident with both the new job and the house/apartment hunt.
6:46 Need to say no more . Thank god he is sane ,unlike you gutless, nameless, cowardley, wise guys on here! C'mon poopsie show us something worth while instead of your same old jealous biases!
Some people on here bulding up bristol must share some of what there on with the rest of us. Bristol is the new section 8 caital of conn. DOWNTOWN IS A DSGRACE. They tell us how good we have it. Look around . Police and public works doing nothing. A personal dept which only hires the Queens friends of dept head friends.

9:27 AM, The only thing "destroying" Bristol is the faceless, nameless twits on this blog who seem to enjoy insulting and degrading their own hometown. If you're having such a problem with Bristol and/or it's leaders, LEAVE. You certainly won't be missed.
Everyone deserves their opinion, but the folks on here saying what a great place to live in Bristol are, well, simply delusional.. Again, you cannot go 1 mile without either hitting an enomorous pothole or getting stuck in a detour.. just look around..the downtown is a laughing stock and embarrassing, three of my neighbors sold, and took a loss to get out of this glorified ghetto..and I live in one of the well sought areas.. As soon as, the market rebounds, we are out of here.. The politicians are all crooked and make deals depending on your last name.. Cops try..well I should say some try and the rest are just ego driven...Either they over react or under react.. Schools OK but you have to plead to get your child anything and they expect them to all act like little robots... God forbid your family needs any Social Services -they are closing that office and continue to threaten the closing of the Social Security office.. No public transportation for those folks either...People say "so what" but if you are going to change a town to a City this is what you are gonna get..You cannot have it both ways.. Anyhow, it use to be a great place to live about 20-30 years ago.. there are so many nicer smaller towns..that have easy access to the highways and do not look like a METEOR STORM has destroyed the downtown area and all the streets.. Keep looking!!!

Well gee 2:25 PM, ever think that maybe there are detours because they're fixing the potholes? They're also working on route 72 and will soon begin working on Main St. Bristol is coming back to life and it's a great place to live. Too bad you can't pull your head out of your rectum long enough to see it.

If your looking for a national socialist homeland , You couldn't find a more welcome place to settle down .
If you prefer a home where the American constitution is honored and considered sacred , you better look elsewhere .

Good City.
That Bristol's biggest asset is their many terrific people, which is not touted enough.

If you move here you will end up seeing what jerks are on this blog. Fortunately we're not all like the BIG (Mouth) three!
Watch out for flying hot dogs in the vendor vs restaurant war.
first off, Why? then go from there.
Stay away . Politicans are afraid of unions keep raising taxes. They only care about votes.
vote republican
If you can get a union job working for the City or State then it's great, otherwise not.

Isn't Cockayne a Republican?

Well, the fact that NOT Mine seems to live in Bristol is a definite drawback. Except for that flaw, Bristol is a great place to live!

It's a great town. It has a scrappy local paper that's hanging in there, and some really good people.
You can get involved on local government and make a difference. (as opposed to whining on the internet)
I say welcome.

The only talent in bristol is how to destroy a beautiful city with no real leadership.
9:27 It's jerks like you that make this city as bad as you say! What was it you did to make it better? Ha

10;55 IT CANT GET BETTER.
Its great if you have a mullet and a pick-up truck with a gun rack or are a member of the KKK. Otherwise Id live somewhere else.
If you stay East of where 229 hits route 6 go for it. If not... Keep going.
Lets face it Bristolis a mess. THE SECTION 8 is taking over the union gets its way.
If you have a child dont let them take a school bus. Its said a lot goes on. Best to pick another town. People complain and nothing is done.
