Petition drive kickoff on Saturday

Organizers seeking to let voters decide whether to create a chief operating officer in Bristol have scheduled a kick-off rally from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday in the Sovereign Bank parking lot on North Main Street.
They need to get slightly more than 3,000 registered voters to sign petitions calling for the referendum within the next 45 days.
There's no word yet on what to expect at the rally. Dancing bears and fireworks are unlikely.

They should also have a petition to bring to referendum any expenditure over 10 million

Exactly what is the wording on the petition?

Will the people be signing a "blank check"??

~ Saturday? Oops, too bad...I think I have to wash my cat on Saturday.

Waste of time ..... The unions don't want it and union personnel will need to review it and either approve or reject it .

...........

.............

Guess what ..... REJECTED .

( coffee stain on page # 7 ) or some equally "SIGNIFICANT" error.

The wording of the petition is approximately as follows:

"We, the undersigned electors of the City of Bristol, hereby present this petition under the provisions of Section 7-188 requesting the amendment of the Bristol City Charter to establish the position of Chief Operating Officer as recommended in the Final Report of the Charter Revision Commission dated June 6, 2008 and rejected by the City Council on June 16, 2008. We certify that we are electors of the City of Bristol residing at the addresses set opposite our names and that we have signed this petition on the dates opposite our names and not more than once."

The following note will be on the bottom of each page:

"Each person whose name appears on this page signed the same in person in my presence and such person is known to me or has satisfactorily identified himself to me. I have signed this under penalties of false statement as defined in Sec. 53a-157b of the CT General Statutes."

And will we be given a copy of what is in the final report?

Maybe the media can spell out all the details that will be changed.
Will current mayoral position still be full time at $100K.
Will COO report to mayor or council?
Who will head up each board and will the Charter be changed to reflect this?

ETC ETC ETC

We just need to finish the job and get rid of all those tied to the unions!!

~ Sorry Craig-ee your petition is way too vague-ee!

Anonymous said...

Cockayne, why don't you start a petition to get your buddy Johnson to start to fulfill the terms of his contract with the city?

Is it just me, or is it blatantly obvious what the problem is with the people who keep trying to pin all of the city's problems on the union?

minor, johnson and cockayne are not necessarily totally anti-union, they are just anti-anything that isn't about them; me,me,me,me,me,me,me,me,me.........

Let's see .....

The Unions destroyed Bristol manufacturing ( New Departure Hyatt )

The Unions destroyed the school system .

The Unions turned municipal workers into free-loaders .

The unions are destroying Bristols' hope for a future .

YES !!!!! Many of us understand that unions are NOT good for the taxpayers or the general public .

7:28 PM said, "The Unions destroyed New Departure." Hmm could it be that New Departure had a bad business model and the people running the company didn't recognize the changing environment or were just more interested in cashing out?

"The Unions ruined the school system." Exactly how so? Bristol's students continue to outperform other cities and towns with similar demographics as well as many communities with higher median incomes levels. This is despite a growing number of students classified as living at or below the poverty level and the fact that other communities spend a great deal more on education.

See Steve Collin's Blog Post "Psssst... Hey West Hartford, Bristol's coming after ya"

"The unions are destroying Bristols' [sic] hope for a future." Could it be attitudes like yours that are actually causing greater damage to Bristol's future than unionized workers?

"The unions are destroying Bristols' hope for a future ."

Talk about brainwashed! Sorry 7:28, but the union is NOT the Anti-Christ, and it's the bonehead politicians who keep trying to feed us this crap who are the real danger to "Bristol's hope for a future."

And the people who show up to exercise their constitutional rights? What smart-alecky insulting description do you have for them?

Lambs to the slaughter maybe?

If the populace is fully informed as to this concept they will not approve it.

The Unholy three are going to try to snow the populace.

"If the populace is fully informed as to this concept they will not approve it. The Unholy three are going to try to snow the populace."

All the people need to know is that the City will finally get a management expert for the day-to-day operation of the town, and to oversee the town staff - not some politician who was just clever enough to get a majority of voters to chose him to be mayor. That's all the unions know either, and that's why they are mounting a full court press to demonize it. They don't want accountability, and they want to keep pulling the strings in the mayor's office.

What about the other details in the Charter that refer to the Mayor , Council, and their responsibilities?
Reporting structure, contract etc etc etc???

Anonymous said...

"the City will finally get a management expert" ???

~ Really? Pray tell, who is qualified as a "management expert". How much experience is required? The salary for the position? What if he/she doesn't work out? Can they be fired? At what cost to the City? Will they have to be a City resident? What degree must they have?

~ Sorry sweetheart, but I'll stick with the system we've been using. I like the fact that the mayor is someone who is well-known to the community, has a vested interest in the City, and who's clever enough to get himself/herself elected by the majority of the voters. And, if for some reason he/she doesn't live up to my expectations, I get to vote for a new mayor, sans the $$$$ and lawyers it will take to get rid of a hired COO (oh, and I don't have any connection to the union either).

4:03pm - brain-drain followers.

None of that changes. If you're so obsessed with the details, go read it for yourself. It's on file with the City Clerk.

The unions re going to destry this city....

How did the petition drive go this past Saturday? How many signatures did they receive?
