An economist takes on Colapietro

Edward Peter Stringham, a visiting associate professor of American business and economic enterprise at Trinity College, took note of state Sen. Tom Colapietro's arguments against Sunday liquor sales and proceeded in The Hartford Courant to demolish them.
He said in the column that "Colapietro seems to have fallen off the deep end on this issue."
Stringham said the senator, a Bristol Democrat, doesn't grasp that Connecticut is losing revenue because residents are buying alcohol out of state on Sunday. It amounts to millions of dollars in lost cash for the state's depleted coffers, the economist argues.

We all said tom must go the union puppetis useless.

Anonymous said...

As a trained economist, he certainly did not present a convincing argument!

the market place should be on equal footing for all businesses and not restrictive to a select few.
maybe if colapietro put this same amount of effort into his district we'd have some representation.

With tom like having no one.

Colapietro is a disgrace. If it weren't for the union lawyers, union thugs, union bosses and union money this little man would be lucky to be sweeping floors in the schools.

Stortz could not run a dress shop or even stock cans at Stop and Shop. Wayward drove a going bar into the ground - why all the clammer over business and alleged competence in running a gov't?

Hey 1:38 When are you going to learn that mlies and same old GOP rhetoric don't work? Except on your two other friends.

No Booze? You May Lose: Why Drinkers Earn More Money Than NondrinkersSocial capital in general refers to connections within and between social networks...my thoughts: So social contacts affect (? increase) the productivity of individuals and groups (therefore making more money?). The more drinking buddies you have, the more people you know, the more money you make!??

GOP Hacks are still at it . What is it now 18 years ? (Yawn)

Don't know how Ward and Stortz got into this thread other than because of your bitter and warped paranoid mindset.

However, if you go back into Bristol politics and government, you'll see that none of the mayors were successful businessmen.
Perhaps the most successful was Longo, and nobody liked him.
Norton had to bail out on the Lake, due to changing times, just like the retail business changed.

But ALL, ALL, were willing to serve the city, all served at other levels before becoming mayor. The same goes for Murphy, Wojtusik, Werner, Leone, Couture.

Because of their combined efforts, we do have a good city.

The question is: what have you done, other than dump on those that were and are willing to get involved.

It is easy to gripe from the sidelines, especially without having to give your name.

Wonder why YOU won't come forward and let people know who
YOU are?

Interesting article in todays Boston Globe on liquor sales in Mass.

Seems like they take in @$20,000/day in sales tax on liquor.

If our sales were about equal Mass's, we would take in @$1,000,000/yr, presuminmg that these purchases did not come fom the normal during the week purchases.

A far cry from the 8 million bandied about.

And these people put budgets together????

Talk is cheap .....like you all.

You apparently don't hear too good ! Try ing some new lies?

There was someone from inside the Ward circle who was thinking of challenging Colapietro for the party endorsement. According to Colapietro the person has changed his mind.

I Hope and Pray That Elliot Nelson Is Going To Challenge Him!

Ward certainly ain't getting anything done in Bristol.

Anonymous said...

Colapietro no longer represents me or anyone I know. Please get some other Democrat to run, or I will have to vote for the Republican guy. I'm sure many others feel the same way.

Be polite, please. Be aware, too, that your words will mean more if you identify yourself. If you see a comment that should be killed, please tell me about it, including where I can find it in order to remove it. Do yourself a favor and remember that somebody can sue you, subpoena records from Google and find out who you are. So don't say something you wouldn't want to defend in court.LMao

The more drinking buddies you have, the more people you know, the more money you make!?? Does that extrapolate into how the mayor got elected??? lol

Stringham's quote- "A number of theorists assume that drinking has harmful economic effects, but data show that drinking and earnings are positively correlated. We hypothesize that drinking leads to higher earnings by increasing social capital. If drinkers have larger social networks, their earnings should increase. Examining the General Social Survey, we find that self-reported drinkers earn 10-14 percent more than abstainers, which replicates results from other data sets. We then attempt to differentiate between social and nonsocial drinking by comparing the earnings of those who frequent bars at least once per month and those who do not. We find that males who frequent bars at least once per month earn an additional 7 percent on top of the 10 percent drinkers' premium. These results suggest that social drinking leads to increased social capital."

This is just part of this so-called economists book. How much did the Republicans pay im to make himself as hypocritical as these cowards.

it is going to be interesting to see if tommy supports putting Keno machines in bars and restaurants and legalizes their play on sundays - better yet tom, here's an idea for you - put Keno in package stores also and then they will also bring in more money on sundays for both the state and the package store owner. Then you will have justified both drinking and gambling on sunday.

Blah, Blah, Blah More hateful wise cracks and again what have you done for your community and party lately ? LMAO You can't seem to get him out of your mind . You must think about him all the time. And once again you aren't too smart to see that I am not Tom but I'm sure if you have the guts to face him he'll be happy to engage ....but then again you don't have the guts.

1:38 - do you really think that tommy can multi-task - doing two things at once?
I don't think that we've seen him do two things, of any significance, in all the time in hartford.
