City councilors happy with committee assignments

All six city councilors said Tuesday they’re happy with the way Mayor Art Ward divvied up committee assignments and council appointments.
“I’m very excited about them – and ready to get going,” said city Councilor Kevin Fuller, a Democratic newcomer.
The mayor met with each of the six councilors elected last week – four Democrats and two Republicans – to ask what panels they were most interested in serving on. Ward said he tried to make sure everyone generally got what they wanted.
The most senior councilor, Democrat Kevin McCauley, emerged as the chair of two key panels, the Real Estate and Ordinance committees.
McCauley said the selection process “really worked out well” and that he’s content.
“It’s a bit overwhelming,” he added.
Both other veteran councilors, Republican Ken Cockayne and Democrat Cliff Block, snagged the leadership of a committee as well.
Block heads the Building Committee while Cockayne will be at the helm of the Council Matters Committee, which mostly deals with claims against the city.
Freshman Republican David Mills secured some important assignments as a member of the Public Works Board, the Ordinance Committee and the 5-Year Capital Improvement Committee, which has the power to approve or reject projects. He is also the liaison to the Park Board.
Fuller was tapped to serve on the Police Board as well as the Capital Improvement panel, the Real Estate Committee and the Bristol-Burlington Health District. He is also the liaison to the Water Board and Housing Authority.
City Councilor Kate Matthews, a newly elected Democrat, will hold a seat on the Retirement Board and the Transportation Committee. She also has a slot on the Salary Committee, which Ward plans to chair.
Matthews said she is most pleased with her assignment to the Forestville School Building Committee, which is crucial to her 3rd District. “That’s my cup of tea,” she said.
Cockayne kept his seat on the Bristol Development Authority and will also serve on the Youth Commission and West Side School Building Committee.
Block, who called himself “more than happy,” remains as the liaison to the Board of Education and holds a seat on the Fire Board and Public Works Board.
Ward said he never imagined he could get the appointments done in a week, but everyone proved cooperative so it was possible to do the work.
Here's the complete list of all the council appointments:

Ya throw the new guy on the Housing Authority committee...this way they can keep us in the dark even more. Nice move.

And Cockayne on BDA so that he can continue to let Rosenthal run amok.

Poor Kate got the dregs.

i'm surprised ward did'nt appoint his grandkids to any committees

the councilperson is just a liaison to the housing authority and has no say in what happens. in other words, they have no voting rights. they are there to report what has been decided upon.

Embarrassed for you said...

7:35 AM, They'd probably do a better job than you would. They're certainly a lot more mature! ;0)

So why does Mills get the "guy" appointments (Public Works, Building, Ordinance, etc.) and Matthews gets the "girl" stuff (Library, School Building Committee, Handicapped)? She's an attorney who specializes in construction law - shouldn't she be on Ordinance and Building?

Report to the mayor who has unilateral say over appointments

But the mayor wouldn't do anything anyhow!

Odin-

The better question is why Matthews got onto the council at all. She's a lawyer and the mom to a young daughter - she should be grateful for these assignments because she has no idea of the time that is necessary to be effective on the council. SHe didn't even take the time to campaign, or properly prepare herself for the lone debate.

Moreover, I believe Ms. Zoppo was on the Ordinance Committee, and she's hardly a guy. As a mom I'm guessing that Matthews wanted to be on the school committee, though Mills, as a former teacher, probably could have contributed a ton as well. And in terms of her being a construction attorney, that's meaningless - word at the bar (not that one, simpleton,) is that she's not a real good one...maybe she's laying down a foundation for a career change.

Poor Kate. The character assasination begins on whether she is a good attorney or not barely 24 hours after her first council meeting. Is anyone going to evaluate Dave Mills' wins/losses as a football coach too? The fact that she is woman and is being criticsed smacks of sexism and is a lot of what others in this town have faced such as Zoppo - what is up with Bristol that people don't want smart people regardless of gender to be involved?

And Cockayne is an Insurance Agent, a single parent with a young child. At least there are two Matthews.
Does not Caockaynes business have some conflicts?
Who does he insure?

Typical Bristol chauvinistic attitude.

shame on you with regard to slandering Kate Matthews. I wouldn't take your word for anything especially with regard to how well she does or doesn't do her job. She worked hard on her campaign as did all the candidates. crawl back into the hole you came from, you woman hater!

The one constant with Zoppo and Matthews is Ward.

2:36 Thats why we pick Ward, So us mgrs at city hall can get over on him.

Anonymous said...

7:45 PM, Trust me, you couldn't get over a street curb...definitely NOT managerial material!

Anonymous said...

"Energy Talk Force?" Oh Steve... was that a typo or a Freudian slip?

Anonymous said...

11:08- what do you want to know about BHA? What would make you feel more comfortable with what the agency is doing? Seriously, any real suggestions?

Anonymous said...

I would do some research to learn more about what the Bristol Democrats are planning on doing... but their website is written in Japanese (not kidding!!) so I'm at a loss here... can I see some faces? What's your platform? Goals for the city? Tell me my fortune? Anything?

Steve Collins said...

8:15 -- I got the list from the city. It wasn't my typo, for a change. As to whether it was a Freudian slip or not, well...

Looks like Ward is still seeking retibution.
His vindictiveness stands out alll over the apointments!

Anonymous said...

Vindictiveness? What part of "city councilors are happy with committee assingments" don't you comprehend? The only people being vindictive around here are the ones who lost...like yourself.

7:27am Sorry Art all ready there!

Anonymous said...

12:04 AM, I'm not Art and if you truly are a manager at city hall, that's definitely a minus for Bristol. Honesty and maturity should be prerequisites for the job...you demonstrate neither.

I have talked with three of the council people: they are not happy.

But they have too much class to air their battles in the media.

12:22 Well i only have a few years left Thank You Bristol, I don`t live in this TOWN.

"Thank You Bristol, I don`t live in this TOWN."

THANK YOU!

Embarrassed for you said...

"they have too much class to air their battles in the media."

Actually, standing up and expressing their dissatisfaction to the media would be a much classier move than going behind the mayor's back and bitching about it to the private sector, ya think?

(No, I'm not Ward, don't bother)

11:08 you know that the city and housing post the agendas and minutes on their websites...you know that if anyone wants to know what is going on, they just have to show up at the meetings...it seems that you are not happy that cockayne got removed but, hey, not great loss...everybody knows that he was a no show anyway...

Anonymous said...

6:08

One of the biggest no shows is Ward himself.
Check the records as I have.

rural pain in the ass said...

2:28 - guessing that you are probably 5:35 or 4;47 - neither of whom we could give 2 sh-ts about.

I checked the housing website. They do have the minutes and I was quite please with the information that it was provided. The City does not provide that much detail. And it is true that Cockayne and Schaffrick din't showed up for many meetings. They should have been removed long ago!

On the other hand, if Ward does not show up for every meeting, it is understandable he is the Mayor and a very bussy man. He needs to improve his response time but he does try hard to get things resolved. As far as I am concern, I am glad he got my vote.

The mayor is on committees by virtue of the Charter, and usually chairs them. They are reularly scheduled and changed by HIM when necessary. They are an integral part of the job.
And HE has chosen to take on two more assignements, ostensibly for political reasons.

After 14 years, as he boasted, he should have known what the job entailed.

Not a very responsible attitude I would say.

Anonymous said...

Its a control issue with Ward.

Anonymous said...

I heard that Mayor Ward did not even stay for the whole session with Congressman Larson last week.
Either he was not feeling well, or he pulled a faux pas, and snubbed our congressman.

Not good.

Anonymous said...

Control and Ego describe him very well.

And, incompetent too!

7:08 - evidently, the majority of voters didn't think like you, thank god. did you vote or stay at home and stew like a dejected little mama's child?
If i were your mama, I would be the one who who was dejected, all of the time.

Anonymous said...

Awww Ma, don't worry! It's just the usual anonymous mayor bashing prattle of the small-minded, petty, vindictive, cowardly gaggle of back-biting biddies. As the election proved...no one really listens to em anyway! ;~)

Anonymous said...

8:30

I don't think that the majority of the voters do think, and unfortunately, they aren't given much information.

Anonymous said...

Awww, if only we all were as special as 12:48 PM thinks he is.

6:06,

But you are not.
