No luck for Larson on Social Security showdown

Press release issued today from U.S. Rep. John Larson:

Today, Congressman John B. Larson, CT-01 and Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, spoke to the Commissioner of the Social Security Administration, Michael Astrue. Congressman Larson strongly urged him to reconsider his decision to close the Bristol Social Security office.

After the call, Congressman Larson said:

“I continue to work with the Commissioner to find a solution to this problem. Unfortunately, he is working under the constraints of a Bush Administration that is threatening to veto any increased funding the Congress has allocated to the Social Security Administration. I explained to him the importance of this office to the people of Bristol and the surrounding community. He is sympathetic to our request and we will work together to try to find an answer.”

Stop trying to put all of the blame on Bush. I'm no Republican or Bush supporter, but it's as much the fault of ineffective Democrats who can't influence the bureaucrats. So much for John Larson becoming a high ranking Congressman, all that rhetoric about how much influence he will have, blah blah blah. He can't even succeed in keeping a tiny Federal office open.

Larson has no need to spend his political clout or call in any favors for Bristol. Bristol votes solidly for him no matter what. He probably got some intern to write the letters and call up the Social Security officials.

Why would Bush do anything for Larson who has been bad mouthing him all over the country with his partisan rethoric?
