Haunted Bristol

According to theshadowlands.net, here's what's haunted in Bristol:

Church of Eternal Light - Formerly one of the three original churches built in Bristol by the Sessions family, church was built late 1889. It has been on national T.V. show , a ghost hunter filmed ghost balls or spirit balls. There are also reports of a former churchgoer who was struck by lightning on the front steps. There have also been reports of an apparition seen in the bell tower.

Lake Compounce Amusement Park - The oldest running amusement park in the world. The first hauntings date back to the opening of the park in the late 1800's when the ghost of the former owner of the land, Chief Compounce, who killed himself in the lake the day before the land was to change hands. Since that time, every building on the land has experience hauntings at one time or another. As well, death has been a plague at the park. In recent years, a child died from injuries received from a near drowning it the lake, a worker was killed underneath a rotor ride, and another was decapitated by a roller coaster. Most of the hauntings have occurred in the Star Light Ball Room. It was said, but this author has not confirmed, that the head of the Norton family, who bought the land from Chief Compounce, died after mysteriously falling from a ladder. The park is now under new management, and is running successfully. However, the park still employs overnight security service people, who all, without prior knowledge of hauntings, have all disclosed their fears and sightings around the park.

Peacedale Cemetery - Sightings of a white wolf that walks down near the banks of the stream that runs through this cemetery are usually sought by those who have a deep emotional problem bothering them.

Pine Lake Area - Feelings of being followed, now a high ropes course, occasionally hearing ropes tighten as if being swung from, loud footsteps in the leafy ground, whispers, and shouts, over all spookiness.

Polish American Citizens Club - Ghost in the bingo room. Friendly. the old president was doing books at the bar one morning . The building should have been vacant, He saw a man walk out of the bingo room into the men’s room. He went into the men’s room to see who was in the building. When he entered the men’s room no one was there. Al the short guy was cleaning up in the bingo room and saw 2 eyes but no body following him around. He says he has seen it several times. Frank Jankowski once a bar tender was cleaning up late one night and heard some one moving chairs in the bingo room. He thought it was a thief went to investigate but found no one there or signs of forced entry.

Saint Paul Catholic High School - In the G-Wing of this school it is rumored that a student once hung himself. A SPCHS teacher also died of a heart attack in this same hallway. During play rehearsals and performances, this area is used for dressing rooms/prop rooms and it is rumored that a ghost has been seen when the lights are off.

Torries Den - Torries Den got it's name because while the Revolutionary War was taking place soldiers who deserted their ranks, also known as Torries hid in the caves located in these woods. Some of these Torries perished while enduring the harsh New England winters. Campers have reported strange lights and a strange heavy breathing noise.

I don't know much about these things, but that writeup about Lake Compounce is almost totally wrong.

It appears that quite a few strange and inexplicable things have been going on in Bristol for the past half century or so that theshadowlands failed to mention. This is odd, since they all have emanated from the very heart of the city, are quite prominent and the various hauntings to which I refer have been witnessed extensively by residents and visitors alike.

The hauntings seem to have started around the time it was contemplated that the core of the city be leveled. Somehow, either everyone went along with those who decided this was a good idea or simply didn't care enough to prevent it from happening. And so it did.

A court and police complex was built, as was a city hall. Developers created a mall complex that included what was likely Bristol's first, only and perhaps last escalator. Lots of other stuff went on as well around the city core and where the river was in the way they covered it up.

What happened immediately following this rush to refurbish is unclear, but if there was a collective feeling of pleasure for a job well done it was short lived. The private but mostly public investment in the various projects that reshaped downtown Bristol started to look a little questionable. The bustle and buzz anticipated was only briefly if at all realized. Turned out people didn't really like it.

Many of the retailers, entertainment providers, restaurants and businesses it was hoped would flock to downtown ran off to Route 6 or anywhere else they could find a parcel. The "proud" facilities created for city government, the police and the courts began to crumble and simply didn't work well for their designed purposes. Lots of new investment had to be made to keep them "functional".

Though it never got to a point where tumble weed began drifting through downtown, all efforts to make good on the original promise of razing the old down town to create a new and vibrant center for the city finally ended in exasperation. Why things never worked out is anyone's guess, but it goes without saying that there are likely quite a few ghosts still lurking around downtown who might not have been terribly pleased with the fate that befell them.

Figuring out what to do with this situation continues to haunt all of Bristol. Political careers and personal reputations have suffered mightily when any attempt has been made to quiet the displaced spirits of what once served as the heart of the city.

Soon, at the very least, some of the vestiges of the ill conceived plan for renewing downtown Bristol will be razed. Hopefully, that will temporarily sate the rankled spirits of the past and allow some breathing room for those who will try to determine what to do next. Let's all hope so. And let's all hope as well, and in fact insist, they get it right and put these souls to rest. Or at least give them someplace better to hang out.

I fully realize that some of you will try to correlate the birth of Ellen Zoppo with this whole circumstance, but she simply hadn't made an appearance on this good earth when this all began its journey to where it now rests. It might be possible she was a twinkle in someone's eye...

Be well, john cullen

ps: pay attention, make whatever effort is necessary and be heard. Assure the ghosts are placated, but more importantly, assure you are as well. Life is for the living - make the lives of you and yours, friends and visitors and future generations happy with your attention now to what will be done in downtown Bristol. Don't have any regrets or resurrect, perpetuate or create new ghosts.

West cemetary by the civil war monument - you hear voices coming from there and see shadows move around the monument. Sit up on the hill and look at it. Full moon is the best time. Its not haunted just the boys trying to convey messages. Trust me, try it next full moon.

I didn't even know anything aobut hauntings until I started working at ESPN and there were several weird happenings as well as strange ghosts appearing on some of the camera monitors. I was trying figure out who the image was of and then it occured to me that this wasn't some one who existed in our time now but from someother era due to the clothing the image was wearing. I am curitous aas to the history of that area around Lake compounce. I mean distant history. I keep thinking something tragic or some curse has been placed on the area.

I just ran accross this. I am the ghost buster that did the investigations in the Church of Eternal Light in Bristol. I did the radio show with KC101 there to prove a place was haunted for a $10,000 reward. I didn't get the 10G's because my evidence was on video even thiough everyone witnessed live what the cameras were recording. KC 101's layers put a clause in the contract that no electronic devices would be permitted after I had told them how I was going to prove the place was haunted. I beleive it was part of the underground railroad and I had senses strongly that there are unmarked graves around back. We had witnesses a demonic presence in back of the curch while recording there. Was one of my most interesting investigations.
