A decade after installing a new track as part of a major reconstruction of Bristol Eastern High School, the city is shelling out $347,000 to replace it.
The track basically wore out, officials said.
Superintendent Philip Streifer said he understands the pavement specifications used for the project more than a decade ago -- drawn up by the state, not the city - erred in the requirements laid out for the paving mix.
He said the state’s specifications for the mix would have been fine if Bristol were several hundred miles to the south.
City councilors unanimously approved hiring the Bristol-based M&M Tennis Court Co. for $346,925 to reconstruct Eastern’s track and field facilities.
Peter Fusco, the assistant superintendent for buildings and grounds, could not be reached Monday.

Is the city, by any chance, having the same problems with Central?
Who did the old work? Let me guess, Carpenter?
Assistant Superintendent of Schools? Really? Another one.
In reading the original version of this, I realize it wasn't clear enough that the paving standards that were wrong came from the state, not the city. Neither the city nor the contractor made a mistake. They followed the state specifications, as they should have.
I'm sorry that wasn't as clear as it should have been.
The state should pay for all of it then.
Steve,
I was just wondering, if the State erred in their specification for the mixture used in the construction of the track, why aren't they being held accountable (and not the tax-payers)?
@ 3:01 - Central had a new rubberized track put in when I was in high school, around 98/99. I'm not as familiar with the Eastern track, but judging by Steve's original post it sounds like they used different material.
They "cheaped" at Eastern.
As a Central alum it doesn't surprise me Eastern did it on the cheap!
:p
it's for the children
