Former U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms died today

Former North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms died today, according to The Washington Post. He was 86 and had been out of office for five years.

Helms was a blatant bigot who was totally opposed to the civil rights movement. I find it incredulous that he kept getting voted into office year after year. Imagine someone actually being proud to say, in effect, that white people were far superior to black people. Thank God for JFK!!
