Signs that primary's getting down and dirty

BRISTOL – Perhaps it’s a sign of the times.
Democratic mayoral nominee Ellen Zoppo said this week that she has asked the police to investigate the “systematic removal and destruction” of her political signs all over town.
Two Federal Hill buildings, a former coffee shop and scaffolding around the entrance to the First Congregational Church have been painted on by Zoppo critics.
“While it appears that my signs are the only campaign signs being targeted,” Zoppo said, “my primary concern is for my supporters who are having their properties trespassed on, and for the public spaces that are being vandalized.”
City Councilor Art Ward, who is taking aim at Zoppo in the Sept. 11 mayoral primary, said neither he nor his supporters had anything to do with the missing signs.
“I really believe it’s not something we should be tying up police resources with,” Ward said.
“As much as it’s not right, and it’s frustrating, ever since I’ve been in politics, you’re always going to experience that,” Ward said.
He said he’s had between 30 and 40 of his 750 lawn signs vanish in recent weeks.
Zoppo said that her campaign has seen 200 signs disappear during the past three weeks, along with “two large banners cut from people's private fences.”
“It happens every night, in a different neighborhood,” she said.
“Anyone who has been involved in Bristol politics will tell you that the rate of Zoppo sign destruction is unprecedented,” said city Councilor Craig Minor, a Zoppo ally.
“I do not think these vandals are connected with the Ward organization,” Minor said.
But, Minor added, “That makes it all the more incumbent on him to publicly denounce these acts as undemocratic and frankly unhelpful to him, because they reflect on him.”
The councilman’s wife, Laura Minor, is offering a $100 reward for anyone who can help police catch the culprit or culprits.
Ward said he doesn’t like sign stealing either. But, he said, there “a million reasons why people do it” and many of them have nothing to do with politics.
“I can safely say that with the people who are working on my campaign, I cannot envision any of them out there doing that,” Ward said.
Zoppo said the police nearly caught someone stealing signs this week.
“A resident of Prospect Place called the police after midnight” on Tuesday “to report three people wearing black masks on the street trespassing and stealing campaign signs,” she said.
“The police found and pursued one individual on foot, and subsequently recovered a number of my campaign signs that were dropped by the suspects as they fled,” Zoppo said.
“I don't know who is doing it,” she added, “although we have been giving a very intriguing description of a person and a car that we are trying to follow up on.”
Zoppo said she believes her own signs are being targeted.
“I do not see the Ward signs, some in close proximity to my signs, being subjected to the same tactics,” Zoppo said.
“It is disappointing that people are resorting to these tactics,” Zoppo said.
“Political involvement and disagreement are good things. Criminal activity in the name of politics is not,” she said.
“I encourage those supporting either me or my opponent to express that support by voting, and discussing the issues and election with their family and friends,” she said.
“I would also like to thank my supporters for maintaining their composure and conducting themselves in a positive manner,” Zoppo added.

Oh stop your whinning! Our police have more important issues to worry about then signs being destroyed.

Anonymous said...

"woe is me", maybe now I'll be able to get some sympathy votes because everybody is picking on me. Thank goodness I have minor Minor here to wipe the tears away.

Anonymous said...

This is nothing more then a publicity stunt by the Zoppo camapign. Signs go down every year in EVERY campaign. To bad the BP fell for the ploy. It is like saying Today we will have daylight followed by darkness....duh...SIGNS GO DOWN for all kinds of reasons. Clearly it is not news worthy in my opinion. There are much more important issues to report then this whinning story generated by these two women!

Anonymous said...

minor had sure better hope that zoppo gets elected otherwise he is going to be like the runt of the pack whose mother abandons him. He definately cannot stand up on his own two feet.

Talk about a clueless remark!!

Hey Minor - shouldn't Johnson do the same? Why just Ward? If you don't think the person doing this is associated with the Ward campaign then why would Ward have to come out denouncing it?
Minor is like gasoline on Ellen's fires!! Guess thats why they keep Tom Benvengo so close.

"Intriguing?" Ellen you sound more like Bill everyday - no proof, but you heard, you know, someone tells you...Our police should have more important issues to deal with. Last I checked lawn signs are on the edge of ones property, not up against the houses or on the front porch.

She sounds like such a child.
"They're taking more of his signs than they are mine"

If signs are her big concern two weeks before a primary she's got serious issues.

Anonymous said...

Steve - I like your article even though the topic is silly.

However the Hartford Courant didn't give her as many lines to whine. They edited her and didn't make it sound like she was blaming another campaign camp.

I'm glad you let the real hissy fit shine through.

For the anonymous poster who complained that the Press "fell for the ploy" --
I learned a long time, as an old campaign aide, that signs vanish. I try never to write about the issue because I know how common it is.
But sometimes the issue gets shoved onto the agenda and ignoring it would be a mistake. This is one of those times.
By the way, it isn't always just teenagers playing games. One time in New York, I had to write an election day story about a county supervisor who got arrested the night before the polls opened because the police saw him stealing his opponents' signs. He lost.

Anonymous said...

It's also a story because it shows something about character. I can clearly see how petty Ellen Zoppo is.

Anonymous said...

It's whining, folks, not whinning. Oh, those Bristol schools!

Anonymous said...

Yesterday's Bristol schools, you mean. Back in the day, when everything about Bristol was top notch.

Anonymous said...

you can bet if 'ol art had his signs disappearing and his campaign signs defaced, he'd raise a stink, too.

us ellen supporters don't need to stoop to childish levels such as stealing a rival candidates signs.

i just hope they catch these thieves and rightfully punish them.

-billy from bristol

Steve, I agree that it isn't always teenagers but it isn't always the opponent either. Unfounded accusations are a reflection on the candidate MAKING the accusations.

Until there is proof that it was a campaign conspiracy to steal Ellen's signs she should refrain from making accusations.

If it is a Ward supporter, which I doubt, it doesn't mean that Art was behind it. Just like Art's missing signs aren't Ellen's fault, unless she is stealing them.

Anonymous said...

I think 'ol Art is too busy focusing on more important things than the infamous sign thieves...maybe it's those lawn gnomes...they look like pretty intriguing characters to me.

Anonymous said...

STEVE,
I don't know what the big deal is about an investigation, since the police were involved last week & they have a description of the car they must be continuing their own investigation. Have you seen a copy of the police report?

Anonymous said...

Ward had signs taken & some destroyed, about 40, but he just replaced them, not contact the police dept. Maybe because Ellen's husband is a police officer he got some inside pull. Either way this who thing is so petty! Sure shows Ellen's true character.

Anonymous said...

Can we get a copy of the police report?

Anonymous said...

Ward had lots to say to the Bristol Press reporter but not "I hereby call upon these people to stop." That shows how lacking in leadership and class this guy is. This whole sign stealing thing isn't about Ellen - it's about Art.

Anonymous said...

What is Ward God? If Art were to say this - do you think the person would stop? Get real. This statment sure sounds like an idiotic remark Minor would say.

Anonymous said...

Now we know why Art Ward has dodged the debates with Ellen.

Anonymous said...

Steve you right about the tone of this election and blog.

As for the issue, drugs are running ramped in thsi city, our high schools are infested with them, and we have the police looking for sign thiefs. What a priority.

To advoid this in the future pass an ordinace that outlaws signs all together and save the politcal campaigns $2000 from having to purchase them.

Anonymous said...

Why? Because Ellen is to busy with nabbing the sign stealers?
Childish, Childish.

Anonymous said...

I don't think this warranted front page news. I am very surprised Ellen hasn't contacted the TV News Stations by now. Afterall, its all about her.

Anonymous said...

If you are not going to enforce the law against stealing signs (and the trespassing part that comes with it), then why have any law at all? You Ward people complaining that Ellen brought this up should be ashamed of yourselves. This amounts to voter intimidation and you are basically condoning it.

I find it amusing that the Ward people's campaign platform is to make noise about Ellen outlining a complex meeting and about her bringing up the fact that a disproportionate number of her signs are being taken from people's property.

Anonymous said...

You must have esp, watch channel 30 news tonight at 5:00 and 6:00, unbelievable.

Anonymous said...

maybe ellen forgot to remember that many of her sign locations have (2) two signs together which would automatically cut her losses in half.

Steve Collins said...

I have to confess that I never watch TV news. If something's on there about Bristol - ever - I'd sure love a heads-up.

Anonymous said...

I hear channel 30 was going to New Britain to talk to her.

What do you mean, you ward people.

Signs should be the least of her problems right now. I think the FOI is bigger than signs.

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I hope it is not on television, this really makes Bristol a laughing stock of CT.

I like to know what else she is up to, I can only imagine. She will get caught again doing something, and then it will be poor me AGAIN. This is getting old real. But you have to admit she is definitely entertaining.

Where is Bruce Lydem I am surprise he doesn't have anything to say.

Anonymous said...

Steve, is anyone looking into getting the police report?

Anonymous said...

As this incident is making very clear, if Ward wins, it will be great for his pals but very bad for the city.

Anyone who thinks writing up a detailed outline for a complex city meeting is a worse offense than vandalism, trespassing, and theft really ought to do some soul searching. Has your loyalty to Ward blinded you that much?

Anonymous said...

Steve, are you there it is coming on channel 30 now.

Anonymous said...

God help the city of Bristol. If this is what our candidates are focused on then we need to start over and fast. Let's see, we have a Mall sucking tax dollars out of our pockets every day. A purchase BTW that both Art and Ellen supported. That alone should point to their level of competence for the job. Parks that are falling down and a school system and board so out of control that we are about to have two different education structures (k-8 & k-5)put in place. That's just the tip of the iceberg. Looking at the COB for what it is, a $160+ million business, the voters need to ask just one question. Would you hire Ellen, Art or Ken to be the CEO? Are any of them qualified for that role? Maybe, but if they don't stop bickering over signs and the "Fab Five" we the voters will never get a clear perspective from which to make that determination.

Steve Collins said...

I haven't asked about the police report yet. When I have a chance, I will.

Anonymous said...

anyone give thought that zoppo's campaign is broke and she can't buy any more signs? This might be serving as a way of getting the public to believe that she had more signs than she did while trying to get the public to believe ward's people are doing her dirty - sneaky and coniving, almost as devious as "exclusion" and "leaking".

Anonymous said...

Here's to Frank Longo's Ghost, you did wonders for the city.

Anonymous said...

Steve...you cleaerly showed who you favor. This is a dumb story..a non story...but you somehow managed to get the BP to give your favorite the front page, the third or fourth page and that got other media involved. Come on Steve, you are a better reporter then this whining sign nonsence. No candidate could buy that kind of publicity. This story complete with it's masked bandits is hear say. If the police investigate this, they will be draged into this foolish fry you have created. I hope they have more sence then you and the BP do running this unsubstantiated horrible piece of "news". On the other hand, I am clearly not voting for Zoppo now that I know that she and the Minors are such whimps!
Gee...maybe you are a Ward supporter...using a little reverse psychology and some ink!Brilliant ploy Steve!

Steve Collins said...

All you need to do is read all the comments here to recognize that it's a story. I have nothing to do with placement.

Anonymous said...

Oh well the evidence is in the city dump now...
Better luck next time.

Anonymous said...

This is so funny, how mad the Ward supporters are over their sign stealing becoming head line news. Just like the phony FOI violation story and the two-year-old "Ellen wants to fire department head" story that you boys planted. You know, if your candidate would stop running away from Ellen and agree to debate her, the BP would have something real to report.

Anonymous said...

Why are her signs up on City Property in Forestville? They should be removed!

Anonymous said...

This is not a story. It is a comon occurance in the campaign business, hardly worth reporting. Now, if the masked bandits or the man with a cape is caugh red handed, then maybe you have a story.

All you have to do is read the Blogg. A vast majority feel this story did not deserve the press it got and there are more complaints about the pettyness demonstarated by Zoppo and the Minors.

There are many more issues to report and more serious issues for the police to deal with.

Anonymous said...

Not ESP, just know Ellen! She is playing the poor me, righteous, give me some sympathy.

The only thing this whole issue is doing is making her look like a bigger fool.

Anonymous said...

iT IS TRULY AMAZING ATTHE FEEBLEMINDEDNESS OF THOSE WHO COME ON HERE CONTINUING TO INSINUATE THAT THE OTHER CAMPAIGN IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DISSAPEARANCE OF ELLEN'S SIGNS - i AM GOING TO INSINUATE THAT ELLEN ONLY HAD A MINIMAL AMOUNT OF SIGNS AND IS USING THIS AS A SMOKESCREEN TO SAY THAT SHE HAD MORE SIGNS WHILE DISCREDITING WARD'S PEOPLE AT THE SAME TIME. TRULY A SIGN OF ZOPPO DESPERATION AND UNSCRUPULOUS TACTICS.

Anonymous said...

To the individual who is concerned about the signs in Forestville.. if you are talking about the signs posted on Rt 72, at the split rail fence.. that is private property-no longer owned by the City of Bristol.

Anonymous said...

"Why are her signs up on City Property in Forestville? They should be removed!"

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. Certainly there are bigger issues then where people are putting there signs but I did notice that it seems like there are Ellen signs wedged in any little piece of open lot or field, especially in Forestville.

Anonymous said...

And they sold this property when?

Anonymous said...

If either camps' supporters feel so strongly about it go ahead and donate some more money. If our police have enough free time on their hands to investigate such 'LARGE' scale thievery then we have a bigger problem. However, I will make sure to keep a camera outside at Halloween time as well. When all of the toilet paper and shaving cream is spread around, I will demand action and most certainly will want convictions........

Anonymous said...

I don't think Zoppo had 200 signs out. Unless she put them up and they were gone the next day.

Anonymous said...

I think that she counts by twos

Anonymous said...

Its all a game and ploy. Plain and simple. Now, can we all move on?

Anonymous said...

I just want to know, who was that MASK MAN.

Anonymous said...

Too bad the police are so consumed with stolen campaign signs. I guess that's why they haven't had any time to investigate the rash of thefts that happened in the Cedar Lake area last May when dozens of vehicles and homes were broken into. But I guess Ellen's signs are more important. The Cedar Lake robberies weren't even reported in the newspaper. I bet if Steve knew that one of those houses is owned by Ellen Zoppo it would have made the front page, too.

Anonymous said...

Maybe the homeless people and prostitutes skulking around Federal hill are using the signs to build shelters.
Now, isn't this all just ridiculous?

Anonymous said...

"Too bad the police are so consumed with stolen campaign signs. I guess that's why they haven't had any time to investigate the rash of thefts that happened in the Cedar Lake area last May when dozens of vehicles and homes were broken into. But I guess Ellen's signs are more important."

You Ward-supporters accuse Ellen of being childish in reporting (that's all she did!) this criminal activity. But how childish is this email?

Anonymous said...

None of this is going to matter when Ken Johnson is sworn in as the next Mayor of the great City of Bristol

Anonymous said...

If it were your home that was broken into you wouldn't think it was childish! Signs vs home breaks in - get real.

Anonymous said...

If you honestly think the police are investigating Ellen's stolen signs instead of house break-ins, you really need to come back down to this planet. We have over 100 employees at the police department - I think they can work on solving more than one crime at a time.

Anonymous said...

Which many of the crimes are more important then "someone took my signs" Ellen needs to grow up.

Anonymous said...

One of the posters here hit it on the head. This little story distracts primary voters from the "scripting" and the "FOI" complaint. It's probably Ellen (or poor Peter) stealing her own signs.

Anonymous said...

I think you are right - this is to throw many off the track of her FOI violation & Scripting game - what she did was wrong, and how many times has she done this and not brought on the table for it? What other deceptive things has she done? No thanks I will take a chance on her for Mayor! I am not sure yet if I will vote for Ward or Johnson, but I KNOW FOR SURE I WILL NOT VOTE FOR ZOPPO!

Anonymous said...

it might seem like ellen is losing signs when in reality, ward bought a lot more signs and has them all up

Anonymous said...

"This little story distracts primary voters from the "scripting" and the "FOI" complaint."

Just like the bogus FOI complaint and the two-year old letter from Pose were efforts by Ward to distract primary voters from his fear of debating Ellen, because he knows that a debate will expose his shortcomings. We're chosing a mayor here, people, not the homecoming king and queen.

Anonymous said...

You're right about the FOI complaint. Maybe this sign business is really a ploy by Ellen (or her supporters) trying to distract the taxpayers. How about a follow-up report on that, Steve?

Anonymous said...

FOI will decide whether or not complaint is "bogus" or not but the reality of it is that under-handed methods were implemented to please the queen when the truth is what is supposed to prevail - the queen become a Leona Helmsley.

Anonymous said...

"FOI will decide whether or not complaint is "bogus" or not but the reality of it is that under-handed methods were implemented to please the queen when the truth is what is supposed to prevail - the queen become a Leona Helmsley."

You've fallen for Ward's self-serving hype. The FOIC will dismiss this complaint as mere election-year shenanigans.

Anonymous said...

the difference between ward's hype and your blind allegiance to zoppo is that ward's hype serves all of the people, not just ellen zoppo

Anonymous said...

And what if they don't dismiss this FOI Complaint as mere Election Shenanigan's~I think statements like telling Mayor Stortz to Practice in the Mirror, Nothing is to leak out, Keep Art Out of the Loop etc. is Much more serious than what you call Election Shenanigan's~signs being "so called" taken is Election Shenanigan's.

Anonymous said...

AMEN

Anonymous said...

"Ward's hype serves all of the people"??? Gag. Ward only cares about himself and his buddies.

Anonymous said...

There is definately procedural wrong-doing in the situation with the "scripting". If FOI is the only way to deal with it, then so be it.
As far as the "fab-five" complaint, it's in writing Sue. Read it and weep.

Anonymous said...

ellen has more twists and turns on the issues than a bag of pretzels.

Anonymous said...

Ellen cannot be trusted, she has proved this over and over again. She will do anything to get ahead in politics. This is not the best person for Bristol!

Anonymous said...

It's unfortunate that many of the bloggers resort to name calling. Whether you personally like a candidate or not, there should still be a certain level of respect. In the end, people like Art and Ellen who voluntarily take on these roles are needed for our system to work. Voice your disatisfaction with them in the voting booth. On the blog, let's stick to the issues. There's been some good discussion inter-mixed with the trash. Let's keep that good stuff going.
