Hi Mary,

Please inform any SVDP Homeless Client of the following:

1. The Mayor’s Office does not become involved with the shelter policies and procedures. It is a private non-profit charity and has it’s own complaint process.

2. There is a posted complaint process at the shelter. Please use this process to communicate with the shelter supervisor. A written note may be given to the shelter supervisor at any time.

3. Even though there is a complaint process at the shelter, the Mayor’s Office will e-mail ( ssssvdp@comcast.net ) your name to the shelter supervisor, Wayne Hennessey, so that he will be alerted to your note.

Subject: COMPLAINTS FROM RESIDENTS OF THE SHELTER

Good afternoon, Phil.

Over the last two weeks, I have had three people, residents of the shelter, come into the Mayor's office with complaints on how they are being treated. There was one woman, and two gentlemen. They wanted to see the Mayor in regards to their situation. The Mayor would like you to meet with them and hear their complaints to see if there can be some understanding of what is expected of the residents and what is expected of the staff.

These people have all said that they feel as if they are criminals, not just people who are down on their luck. The two gentlemen that have asked to meet with you or Mr. Hennesey are David and Carlos. They say they are continually blocked by the monitors from having any kind of conversation with either of you.

Please let the Mayor's office know how this can be resolved.

Thank you.

Mary Suchopar

Executive Assistant

Office of the Mayor

Rules .... Rules .... Rules ..... We don't need no stinkin' rules .

Can you imagine the city hall running if they were forced to follow rules ??

Wardie better nip this one in the bud before it spreads .

I say leave these decisions to the people who run the place. "Cider House Rules". They know what they are doing, and they care about people. If not, they would be working somewhere else and making more money.

I agree with Odin, probably for the first time.

I agree with Odin too, but on the other hand we can't have people sleeping on the streets (or in the park). There's got to be a happy medium somewhere?

Sleeping in the streets is their choice.
Space is available, all they have to do is follow some simple rules.
Why would that be a problem, or should we just allow anything to go on in these shelters?

Sounds to me as if this fellow who was kicked out did more than complain, but he'll never admit to it. There's two sides to every story and we've only heard from one person. I also think the mayor needs to stay out of this. This is not a city matter and he should have made that clear right from the start.

The people from the shelter made it the mayor's business when they came asking for his help. Touching base with the shelter's director and getting the other side of the story was the responsible thing to do.

Obama would have stepped in, gave them money, cut the directors salary and then gone on TV.

Artie, you just don't know how to play the game.

But Art didn't "touch base" with Lysiak. Art told him how to do his job. Big difference.

Your wrong...this group gets money from the city...the mayor has every right to ask what the policy is.

I think the mayor should be involved. The problem is with people who live in Bristol, either on the street, in a house, or a shelter, the mayor is sworn to serve us, the citizens of Bristol. As far as the situation, if the man isn't on drugs, and didn't become violent,(as they would have called the police if he did), he should not have been kicked out. The supervisor should have made herself availible, its her job to care for these people. Yes, there are two sides, but how can it be resolved if one is hiding? Just my opinion, so don't blast me please.

After being stuck in the middle, all Ward did was send Lysiak an e-mail asking him to talk to the complaintants. He never told him how to do his job. Big difference.

I dont see where it says to butt out? Strong take on what is here.

Anonymous said...

Who started this controversy, Collins or Alford?

Anonymous said...

If Art is going to take it upon himself to tell someone who runs a business how to do his job, the least Art could have done was pick up the phone and do it himself. He had his secretary send Lysiak an email. That was rude.

Surprised???

Anonymous said...

if Art had personally reached out he would have been slammed by most of the readers here for sticking his nose in where it isn't needed...sounds like he gave it the perfect amount of attention. It seems like only the people w/ an axe to grind come on here and post...kind of sad and pathetic

1:12 PM Is right on the money. Ward handled the situation well.

Does his secretary get half his pay?

Exactly!

"Touching base with the shelter's director and getting the other side of the story was the responsible thing to do."

Did any of you people actually read the story? His secretary sent Lysiak an email telling him to meet with these people. That's not "getting the other side of the story". That's assuming these people are right and Lysiak is wrong for not meeting with them. Arrogant.

And meanwhile we are expecting to have a 9 million dollar deficit.

Get real folks!

Anonymous said...

10:58

I would think that the Repubs would be all over that!

????

Anonymous said...

10:58, That would be "ask" Lysiak if he'd meet with the people and maybe find some solution. BTW e-mail is a very acceptable form of communication in this day and age, and having one's secretary send one is also pretty common. The only arrogant person making assumptions here is you. Even the repubs are smart enough to recognize a non-issue when they see one.

Anonymous said...

8:32

But the huge deficit should not be a non-issue!!!

Anonymous said...

But the Rpublicans are not prepared to discuss the deficit, so we won't hear about it until AFTER the election.

Anonymous said...

Give us a break - Its an election year, Ward could careless about this shelter.

Anonymous said...

8:32: Well, you confirmed my suspicion that none of you have actually read the story.

The secretary's email reads: "The mayor would like you to meet with them and hear their complaints". That's white-collar for "I'm telling you to meet with these people." And coming from a guy who's been a manager for all of two years to a guy who's been a manager for over twenty, that's a bitch-slap.

Anonymous said...

10:58, Give me a break. Lysiak and Ward are on good terms. No bitch slapping necessary. The matter has been settled. Let it go.
