Tunxis gets $2.2 million to begin next new building

Just in, from Gov. Jodi Rell's office:

Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that $2,221,622 in funding for the design of additions and renovations at Tunxis Community College in Farmington is expected to be approved when the State Bond Commission meets on March 28th. The design work is for renovations to an existing 34,000 square foot building to provide more classroom space as well as the construction of a new building that will house faculty and administrative offices.

“Providing the best learning environment possible for our students continues to be one of my top priorities,” Governor Rell said. “Investments in our institutions of higher learning are the best investments we can make in our future. Our community colleges play an important role by developing the skills of Connecticut’s workforce and we want to make sure that all of our public colleges and universities offer first-class educational opportunities.”

Last month, Governor Rell attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new $34.4 million library and classroom building at Tunxis Community College which doubled the size of the College. That project consisted of a 37,000 square foot two-story library with clock tower, a 58,000 square foot classroom building, and a glass-enclosed cyber café.

The new library includes two computer classrooms, 14 study rooms, an adjacent 40-seat classroom, and a coffee / sandwich bar. The new classroom building includes five science laboratories for Biology, Chemistry, Micro-biology, and Physics; a simulated dental hygiene clinic and laboratory; computer graphics studios; art and photography studios; six classrooms; eight break-out rooms; and academic resource space.

“Across Connecticut, we are continuing to transform the campuses of our public colleges and universities with new and renovated spaces and facilities,” Governor Rell said. “We will continue to focus on the creation of outstanding educational opportunities for all of the citizens of our state.”

Tunxis Community College was founded in 1970. The College serves close to 12,000 credit and non-credit students each year.
