Many reporters laid off at Courant

I'm sick after reading this.
I just don't know what's going to be left of journalism in Connecticut unless something changes quickly.
For more, here's The Laurel's coverage and here's Denis Horgan's The Mardi Gras Massacre.
And here is The Associated Press story on it.
Leonard Honeyman's Len's Lens has a more personal reaction.
Oh, and here is the Courant's official version.
On a personal note, I worked with a couple of these folks before they moved on to the Courant -- Matt Eagan and Loretta Waldman -- and I feel for them. Matt, in particular, has become a terrific, all-round journalist. I just can't believe they let him go.

Maybe Mr. Schroeder can hire Loretta Waldman and Matt Eagen? I believe they both worked at the Bristol Press at one time, didn't they?

Yes, I worked with both Matt and Loretta. I'd be especially thrilled to have Matt come back. He's a great journalist who's only gotten better. I can't believe the Courant dumped him. But how many people want to go back to where they started? It seems like a step down, I'm afraid, even if it isn't really.
I hope that we can hire some terrific former Courant writers, but I suspect the pay would seem shockingly low to them.

You ever think maybe you picked the wrong career, Steve?

Today, for sure, that thought has crossed my mind.

I know both Matt Eagan and Loretta Waldman from their time in Bristol.
Matt is a lively, interesting writer and a very nice guy. He's smart, too. The Courant was stupid to lose him since he was one of their best.
I just can't say anything close to that about Loretta.

It's too bad about the lower pay, but a job is a job. Invite them back.

That's terrible about Matt. He's become a must-read in the Courant sports pages, and it's obvious he's a heck of a journalist. Hopefully he hooks one with someone somewhere.

Oh well, they can join the ever-growing club.

Could have been worse; they could have all worked for the Rocky Mountain News

I know what to do for these unemployed people...raise taxes on businesses and wealthy people so they don't hire anyone! Permanent vacations for everyone!
