Enfield liquor stores don't like Colapietro

Take a look at this blog post by an Enfield Republican who doesn't like the way state Sen. Tom Colapietro, a Bristol Democrat, is standing pat in his fight  to keep liquor sales off-limits on Sundays.

Years ago the laws requiring liquor sales to end at 8:00 were passed as a reaction to a string of deadly hold-ups by Mad Dog Taborski, the last man executed in the electric chair in CT. After that threat was over, liquor store owners, who at the time were very often politically connected ex-cops or ex-firemen liked that they could close early and on Sunday without fear that a competitor would lure their customers away by staying open. That's the main reason this law has lasted so long - mom and pop store owners liked it. That may be why Colapietro opposes changing it as well.

Neither do we. But I think he's finally right in this case.

Tell the Enfield liquor stores they're not alone. We don't like Tom either.

For once Colapietro is right.

The 9PM closing time could should return to 8 as well as all it does is cost small store owners either time or extra wages.

It's time we stopped issuing anymore grocery store beer permits too.

With those new self checkout lanes there's no way to tell how many minors get by with a 30 pack.

I really don't think he cares whether you like him or not. If I were him(and I guess he is) I would ignore both of you because no matter what he says he's a Democrat and you are way to partison to be of any use to the people.

Tom Colapietro is a donkey. The law should be dropped. Any revenue that comes in is a plus. If a mom and pop stores close oh well. There are to many liquor stores anyways.

“When buying and selling are controlled by legislation, the first things to be bought and sold are legislators.“
—P.J. O’Rourke

The above quote says it all. End of debate, let the bill reach the floor of the Senate for an up or down vote. Isn't this how a Democracy works or is it to be controlled by Committee Members, only?

Apparently Colapietro's solution to the state budget crisis is to call for the creation of a "Super Lottery".

These lotteries prey on the hopes and fears of the weakest members of society… and have a reverse Robin Hood effect… take from the poor to give to the government.

Shame on Colapietro for targeting the most vulnerable members of society, in times like these!

If you ask me, I think it's pathetic that this is the best he can offer to solve the state's fiscal problems. He won't let honest businessmen open up on Sunday… but he wants to encourage more lottery gambling. What's wrong with this picture?
