Thanks to one of my anonymous readers for calling this to my attention:
Google has scanned the 711-page text of a wonderful 1907 history of Bristol and made it available in PDF form to download or read online. It's titled Bristol, Connecticut: in the Olden Time New Cambridge, Which Includes Forestville. Published by Eddy N. Smith, George Benton Smith, and Allena J. Dates, assisted by G.W.F. Blanchfield, the history is full of pictures and interesting stories about Bristol's early years.
I read it a long time ago and learned quite a bit.
You can find it online here. Buying a copy would set you back about $80, but thanks to Google, it's free. And you can't beat free.

Not running for anything. Currently live in Canton. Never got runned out of town either. Went thru a bad divorce. Thanks for reminding me... Anyway, I always have been a history buff. I am a strong advocate of preserving history..nothing like saving an old house!!!! Speaking of old houses I am in the process of re-purchasing my old 1785 William Jerome II House in Bristol. It went under foreclosure. I plan to restore it. I have no intentions of being politically active. However, I will be forming " The New Cambridge Society" It will be for people interested in Bristol's history and hopefully encourage our local government to remember our past and save Bristol's history... Perhaps you haven't been made aware of the current policy in Bristol .
Sneak in without notice and tear down old homes .
You mentioned interest in an older home being in foreclosure . That sounds like a prime target for the current Bristol Gestapo .
I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the risks prior to investing in the 'modern' Bristol .
Hey anonymous 2:03: There is no Bristol Gestapo no matter what the little voices tell you. Up the meds and hang in there.
