In 1961, Bristol voters got a chance to vote on whether to switch to a city manager form of government, hailed as a way to make municipal government more efficient. They rejected it on a 3,789 to 3,073 tally.
The city's Democratic Party and the Greater Bristol Labor Council led the opposition to the change at the time. They said it would cost do much and that it wasn't necessary.
