City cuts deal with McDonald's to move downtown restaurant

The city is trying to work out a deal that would have the downtown McDonald’s move to a spot next door to Dunkin’ Donuts on North Main Street.
City councilors have given tentative backing to a land swap that would shift the fast food restaurant to a new spot on the 17-acre former mall site.
The move may be made before the rest of the property is redeveloped as part of a bid by the Long Island-based Renaissance Downtowns to remake the city center.
Edward Krawiecki, Jr, the city attorney, said the new eatery will likely be “more upscale” than the existing McDonald’s.
Krawiecki said its owner is eyeing 80 seats, including some outdoors, and an atmosphere akin to the McCafe-style that some of the chain’s establishments have adopted.

  1. That's quite a plus I suppose. The McD's in downtown hasn't been renovated in my entire lifetime, I'm 27, and it has been the same inside that whole time it seems.

  2. Yup, we are really going to have an attractive center of town. Whats next, more dollar stores?

And we wonder why we have the problems we do.

    Sad, Sad, Sad.

  3. lets control the drive thrus and have a true pedestrian friendly downtown!!

  4. McDonalds as upscale? I love Bristol, so classy. Putting McDonalds right across from City Hall? That is a horrible idea but at least that will put the tax dodging cheapskate street vendors out of business.

  5. Folks, There's a reality here you have to recognize: McDonald's own its property in the middle of the mall site. It's not going to go away unless the city makes a deal. So moving it to a better spot -- for the city, at least - is worth something.

  6. 3:25 PM, You're wasting your breath talking to these pinheads. If they can't complain about Bristol, their tiny little heads will implode!

  7. and to add to 3:25pm, in order for McDonalds to move, they will have to design to meet the new downtown regulations which calls for streetfront, two stories, at least a hidden drivethru (if granted by the landuse boards)all so it is integrated into the overall redesigned downtown project. 3:25 is correct, if you don't get McDonalds out of their current site, you have no project, it is as simple as that. I think this is actually a good first step, small that it may be.

  8. Yeah, Bristol needs to make sure a fast food restaurant doesn't leave town!!! We have so few!

  9. did someone say "mcdonalds" ?

    ReplyDelete
  10. 5:04: you're not listening. The goal is not to keep McDonald's downtown. The goal is to get to agree to vacate the spot where they are now. If the cost of that is some concessions as the new location, it's a good deal. But that's too many moving parts for you, isn't it?

This entire downtown scheme is a joke and has been so from the start. You can thank the Democrats like Zop-Sass, Minor and McCauley for driving this nightmare down our throats.

  13. Hey Wesconn, in your adjectives for the kids you forgot the one that fits most when always going the MD's - overweight! LOL!

  14. "and to add to 3:25pm, in order for McDonalds to move, they will have to design to meet the new downtown regulations which calls for streetfront, two stories"

All they have to do to comply with this is to ask Frank Johnson how to design a fake second floor like the one he approved at Walgreens on Main Street.

When Nicastro was mayor, Bristol could have purchased the mall for about a million bucks but Frank said Bristol wasn't in the real estate business. Ironically, he supported the 5.5 million scheme.
You are right, the scheme is a joke but you are blaming the wrong comedian.

  16. Lets see what position Ward takes (if any)!!!

  17. Poboy:

Frank was right the first time. The second time he succumbed to political pressure...from the group which the three people I mentioned belonged to.

  18. Complain, Complain, Complain If any of you had a brain in your head you would realize you just got taken again in the primary. Until you realize who is standing up for the citizens of Bristol and has your interest at heart, we are all in trouble. Just a hint it's Not McCauley, Zoppo,or Nicastro. I'll bet you have it all figured out by November 2nd.

  19. 11:41: well that's interesting. Minor hasn't been a councilman for over a year and a half and zoppo over two and a half years. There are also SIX council people, count 'em, SIX and it requires a majority vote which hasn't even come before the council. So to sit there and blame three people, you Ward lackey, and two who aren't even on the council anymore on an issue that hasn't even come before the council shows just how ignorant and frightened you really are of those three. Get a life and a brain while you are at it!

  20. 12:42 the position Ward will take is in an overstuffed chair with his feet up on an ottoman sitting back watching the world go by as his lackeys figure it all out.

Didn't Mary Rydingsward & Her Cronies Vote Down Bristol Having A Target Store...Apparently They Want High End Stores...Macy's Etc.(They Won't Survive Here in Bristol),Bristol Does Not Need Any More Dollar Stores OR A Too High End Store(s), A Target Would Have Been Nice...Southington CT. Now Reaps Our Loss...On Middle Street They're Moving The Historical Home and Putting Another CVS There...What's The Sense In This?

  25. Ward lackey aka non-revisionistAugust 23, 2010 at 9:30 AM

    August 15, 2010 8:43 AM:

Ellen Zoppo and her alles were the ones who first brought forth the proposal to buy the mall. Minor was a big proponent of the proposal, the project and the tax-payer expenditures. I do not believe Ward was as big a proponent as the two aforementioned council members. Perhaps McCauley was busy talking about ridiculous things like "The fire hydrant snow removal ordiance" to be too involved. But after making the statement "like it or not the city is in the real estate business" it's hard for one not to see his support for the purchase of the mall.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 9:30

But Ward sat in on all the secret, perhaps illegal, meetings on the Mall acquisition!

Gerry relied on Artie, not on Ellen!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hey dimwit!! Ward was a huge advocate of buying the mall when he was the deputy mayor to Couture and Kostas. They wanted to do all of it without public involvement.

    Hey dimmest wit:

Prove it! He was no "huge advocate". If he was in favor of it, he sure kept it a secret. Post the press release that backs up your (ignorant) statement.

What's your point anyway? Were you outspoken against it?

    ReplyDelete
  33. 10:18

He kept it a secret, as did Couture and Diamantis.

And Ward is still keeping things a secret!
