Ron Messier leaving Board of Finance

Veteran Board of Finance member Ron Messier said Tuesday he asked the mayor not to reappoint him to the powerful nine-member panel.
Messier, who has served for a decade, said he is bogged down at work and anxious to spend his spare time with his family.
Messier said he toyed with seeking another term, but realized it would be better to let someone new take his seat.
Mayor Art Ward could nominate a replacement for Messier within weeks.

  1. Ward would be well advised to appoint someone who understands the CITY finaces and is not afraid to stand up and question things.

He needs someone to off set Mize, and hold Klockos feet to the fire.

  2. Klocko's feet are fine Bent a fang go.

  3. Ron Messier was a great BOF Commissioner and will be missed.

  4. Oh, please don't tell me we are going to reward Ragani with this seat......

  5. Ron, thanks for your service.

    Don Soucy

  6. Sorry to see you go.
    Should have run for mayor.

  7. do something novel...appoint a woman

  8. Thank you for your service.

  9. here's a novel idea, appoint the person who's best suited for the position!

  11. 9:23,

Ya, okay Bill. You're gonna get a cramp in your arm from patting yourself on the back. Take a break.

  12. What does this have to do with Stortz?

    ReplyDelete
  13. but neither woman stortz appointed do nothing on these boards & committees - they are seat warmers only.

  14. Art will appoint someone who will agree with him on his issues. To bad, would be nice not to have yes men all the time.

  15. Since he will replace a Dem with a Dem, I would advise him to ask Ellen Zoppo Sassu to take the seat. If he wants to appoint a republican, he should ask Jill Fitzgerald.

    ReplyDelete
  16. He hates both those women.

    ReplyDelete
  17. the mayor apppointing Zoppo-Sassu would be a real turning point fo the dems but I am going to advise everyone to not hold their breath.

I am sure she is getting blamed right now for behind the scenes plays that made sure ragani did not get the endorsement and the other two did.

  18. They are all seat warmers!

That i swhy we are having trouble coping with the current fiscal situation.

  19. Thanks for your many years of service Ron.

  20. To 10:47 - comment about seat warmers.

If you had attended any budget meetings or finance board meetings - the two women you call seat warmers take active roles on the board by asking questions and expecting accountability.

  21. We need someone who will hit the ground running.
The next year or two will be extremely critical and we do not have time for someone who hasn't even been to a meeting or been involved in local finance.

  22. The 3-4 names that come to mind that would be quickly and meaningfully productive would not be acceptable to Ward.

Read between the lines: he got rid of Soucy and Messier because they did question things. The two gentlemen are just that, too classy to raise a firestorm over being removed.

But we do need someone that will raise legitimate questions and take the time to know what is going on.

  23. "I am sure she is getting blamed right now for behind the scenes"

    Ya think?

    ReplyDelete
  24. A wise man knows when to exit.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ward ought to appoint Gills: he is about as qualified as anyone else Artie will consider.

    Slippery slope anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  26. 3:48pm - I have attended more meetings and board meetings then you I am sure. I can make a comment on this because I have seen them in action, or lack there of. They were pawns in Stortz political game and that is all.

  27. Dear Mayor:

Please don't appoint Ellen "Spend & Tax" Zoppo!

    ReplyDelete
  28. And pray tell what is political about appointing a financial ananlyst of a major taxpayer, and a business manger for another major corporation, and an accoutant who has served on other boards previously?

Sounds like good choices to me.

    ReplyDelete
  29. has anyone gotten off their duffs and sent any of these suggestions to the mayor?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Suggestions to the Mayor? Like he will listen? I can't stop laughing, please stop the jokes about our fine Mayor.

  31. 1:29 pm:

"behind the scenes plays that made sure ragani did not get the endorsement"?!? Boy are you spinning what really happened way out of alignment.

No one was opposed to Ragaini - they just preferred Marko, and an incumbent always gets re-nominated (unless, of course, the mayor has a personal vendetta against the guy for doing something unforgivable like supporting Ellen two years ago). "Bullet voting" is hardball politics. It's considered bad form and is unheard of in Bristol. It was the Ward machine who called that play, and it failed because they never had enough votes (even with the ones they stole from McCauley).

    ReplyDelete
  32. "No one was opposed to Ragaini - they just preferred Marko"

Yah, right...and I've got some swamp land in Florida I'd like to sell you!

    ReplyDelete
  33. And I might buy that "swamp land" from you, if you're as ignorant about real estate as you are about Bristol politics.

    ReplyDelete
  34. 4:09,

...and I would sell it to you, but you definitely are ignorant in both Bristol politics AND real estate, and I'd feel guilty taking advantage of such a fool.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I made suggestions, have not heard back!

    ReplyDelete
  36. 9:01 - guess that tells you how bad that your suggestions were.

    ReplyDelete
  37. 4:16

No matter how bad, courtesy warrants a response. But that is clearly missing.

Also, any idea to save taxpayers dollars can't be all bad, from street lights to trash collection to things I notice on my street that the mayor would not likely to see.

But a class act would make sure I got a response.

    ReplyDelete
  38. typical aninymous accusation, have you ever followed up on your suggestions to see if they were even received or is it easier to just accuse the mayor of no response? take some of the time that you waste on this blog and call his office - it's easy with these new fangled contraptions that they call telly-phones.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Common courtesy would assure a response, be it phone or mail.

Why would not my snail mail get to the mayors office, desk?

And my letter was not sent "anonymous", but had a name and address.

Normal and proper way to do business.

    ReplyDelete
  40. 4:14 - so resend it and ask for a response or sit and mope about it - ever think about going to a council meeting and whining or are you just a wimp who hides behind anonymous postings? I am pretty sure that I know the answer - loser.

    ReplyDelete
  41. 6:35

I have been to Council meetings, have been to BOF meetings, have been to Joint Board meetings, and have occaisionally spoke at them.

There is NO reason why I should have to resend any letter. But it is clear that the nature of my experience indicates to me why the city is so poorly run!
