Press release from the Bristol Veterans Council:
May is National Military Appreciation month, a special time to recognize the sacrifices of our troops and their families. As part of the Memorial Day weekend celebration, Bristol will host the region’s largest ever gathering of multi service military exhibits on Sunday, May 24, 2009.
Memorial Boulevard in Bristol Connecticut will be the site of the daylong celebration, beginning at 8:00 A.M. until 4:30 P.M. There will be a Sunrise service at 8:00 with the ceremony starting at 1:00 P.M. As Bristol recognizes past, present and future members of the armed forces, all branches will be represented to include the Army Reserves, and the CT National Guard.
Participants committed include:
Army Major General Bruce Zukaskus (KEYNOTE SPEAKER )
Silver Star recipient, SFC Greg Stube (KEYNOTE SPEAKER)
REPRESENTATIVES OF MULTIPLE MILITARY UNITS (AR/NG)
HONOR GUARD (All 5 Branches of Military Service)
MILITARY VECHICLES (wheeled and tracked from both past and present)
DISPLAYS OF EQUIPMENT FROM ALL BRANCHES (to include an Army surgical unit, helicopter landing at 10:00 AM, Coast Guard and Navy patrol boats, Marine Corps weapons display, and many interactive exhibits)
Saturday:
11:00 Monument dedications - Dedication of the aerators “on Memorial Boulevard Pond and
Re-dedication of Hiker Monument and World War I Monument
11:30 Community Covenant signing
12:00 CSM Savino scholarship presentation
Sunday:
8:00 AM— 4:30 PM Memorial Day Weekend Celebration on the Boulevard
Monday:
9:00 AM Bristol Memorial Day Parade (Starts at Race Street)
12:00 PM Forestville Memorial Day Parade
Memorial Boulevard was originally established in 1921 to honor Bristol citizens who lost their lives in World War I. Since then monuments to those killed in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, and to the men and women who have served in other conflicts, have also been erected.

If I may,I would like to suggest to everyone that they take a moment this weekend and Mon. to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day,which is to remember and honor those servicemembers who gave "their last full measure of devotion" so we and our children might continue to live in peace and freedom.They are the true "heroes."

Why did Ward cut the veterans Service officer position from the budget?

Ward just didn't fill it yet. Why who knows only the "king" knows.

To be quite candid, Al Santucci, a dear man, had nothing to do for many years, nor would any replacement have anything to do for the salary paid.
ReplyDeleteThe feds have personnel and the state has personnel to provide programs to veterans that need the services. The city does not need this position. Ward, the consummate veteran, will take some heat on this, but if he is not filling the position because it's not needed, in this case, he is correct.
I am a veteran, I love veterans, but my God, veterans are not the be all and end all of this community. Let it go. Remember, yes, dwell on, no.

Who is paying for this extravaganza? Just curious - things are tight and the legion had their money stolen. Is this a city event?
ReplyDeleteIt is nice to see this event come back to where it belongs. The Memorial Boulevard. The decision to have it at Lake Compounce was a poor decision and left a lot of folks out.

ReplyDeleteWard didn't eliminate funding for the veterans services office. In fact, the budget passed last night includes $22,915 for the position, which I take to mean they plan to fill it next winter. That seems to fit roughly with the timetable the mayor told me about a month or two ago (you can search on here for that story).

$22,000 for full time work? Man that stinks. Al only made $22,000 in that position?
ReplyDeleteThe $22K isn't for the whole year. It would cover part of the year. The city's fiscal year starts in July. They won't fill the position until winter so they don't need to budget an entire year's pay.

This coming weekend we will celebrate Memorial Day. Originally intended was to honor the fallen heroes of the Civil War, it has grown, and rightfully so, to a day to honor all veterans and to show our appreciation for their efforts.
Bristol, as usual, will have some significant events to help show our appreciation. As always, Flags are flown on the Boulevard Route 6, and Downtown. There will be a parade and other activities, including those traditionally held in our schools to make the students aware of the sacrifices made that enable them to live and enjoy the life that they do, in Freedom.
What we all can do, and all should do, is make our own individual attempts to display the American Flag honoring of all veterans and to honor those service personnel currently serving. While some may become blasé regarding the military action in the Mid-East, we should not and we must not forget that our service personnel are dying for us, each and every day.
So, please do two things.
First, fly the American Flag somewhere on your property. From your house, porch, flagpole, mailbox, garage anywhere it can be seen. Fly it properly, but do fly it. Any size flag will do, but the more visible the better.
Second, send an Email to your friends, in Bristol and elsewhere and ask them to keep the flag-flying message going.
Just think of the multiplication of contacts that will result. Just think of the impact that it will have, from the neighbor that lives on a cul-de-sac or dead end street with you who now sees the flag on their very private street, to those that can and will fly a flag on a busy street. It might just get more people thinking about Memorial Day and our veterans.
Your effort should make you feel good and won’t cost you anything.
